State Vol. IV, No 27 The Bucknell Game Called Off. Saturday's rain caused disappoint ment to the State undergraduates as well as to the 150 Bucknell students who came from Lewisburg to , see the tennis tournament and the base ball game between the two colleges. Those who came on the special train, over a hundred in number, arrived about noon on Saturday by way of Lemont. The members of the Phi Delta Sigma upper class fraternity of Bucknell held a ban quet in Bellefonte on Friday night, and drove up Saturday morning in time to see the flag scrap. The tennis tournament was started at ten o'clock in spite of the threat ening weather, Harris and Man chester playing for Bucknell, and Waha and Twaddell representing State. At the end of the first set the rain was falling in a steady driz zle, and the tournament was called off with the score of 6 3 in favor of Bucknell. About one o'clock the rain stopped and it looked as if the baseball game might be played. The band and many of the spec tators repaired to Beaver Field, but frequent showers again prevented the game. Efbits are being made by both colleges to arrange another game to be played here later in the season. Capt. Hay's Term Extended. It is wcicome news to all that Captain Hay is to have his term of office extended for one year. He came here in September, 1905, and will in June have completed his third year as Commandant of Cadets. It is hardly necessary to mention the great number of im Coll STATE COLLEGE, PA., MAY 7, 1908 provements he has made in the military department. Taking charge here when the department had practically no organization, he will finish this year with an ideal organi zation, almost perfected. Next year he hopes to have all on an excellent basis and such as to require no more time and work from the students than is absolutely fair and necessary. Drill and Tactics will be rated with the 50 hours a week schedule the same as work in the other departments, and will not be extra as at present. Students will get credit for all the time spent in drill, and no one will be expected to drill more than two years. The extension of Captain Hay's term will be until Sept. 15, 1909, and was secured largely through the efforts of Dr. Sparks who was in Washington recently. Syracuse Track Meet. The first dual meet to be held in the new Stadium at Syracuse re sulted in a victory over State, by the score of 72 to 53 points. Dcspite the drizzling rain and the heavy track the time was but little below the average. All the races were close, and for a while State was ahead. The Syracuse record of 127 feet 8 inches in the discus throw was broxen by Horr, his new record be ing 128 feet and 7 inches. Horr also won the other weight evenst with ease. The two-mile event was one of the prettiest of the afternoon. Smith took the lead and maintained it for six laps, when he has passed by Call and Stube. Smith's failure to win was largely due to the attack of tonsilitis with which he has been suffering for the last few weeks. In egian. the half-mile Marble and Hay had a hard fight, the former finally win ning by a good margin. Berry was boxed in the 440 yard dash, but the protest was not allowed by the referee, Charles H. McCormick. The pole vault was the farce of the meet. The two Syracuse vaulters Wisner and Preston agreed to set the qualifying height at nine feet and neither was able to clear the bar. Zink and Maurhoff divided the points bet, ,, een them, there being no third. The summary: 100 yard dash—Won by Bubb, State; Child, second; Soule, Syra cuse, third.
