Mechanical Feed. Some sixty members and guests of the Mechanical Engineering so ciety took part in the good time which attended the banquet of the society at McAllister Hall last Satur day evening. After the tables had been cleared. Toastmaster Harper called for a number of short talks. Prof. Reber spoke of the business side of engineering and the need ior general culture in an engineer’s education; Mr. Parker discussed the value of shop training in connection with a college education; Piesident How ard talked of the needs of the col lege and the duty of graduates to look after its welfare; while F. T. Simon ’O9 spoke in behalf of the sophumore members, promising their active cooperation in the woik of the society. Several matters of general college interest were dis cussed after the regular program had been carried out, among them being the honor system and a plea for a more frequent use of our col lege song “Alma Mater.” Y. The trials for positions on the team will be held within a week and those who wish to compete are requested to confer with Runk ’lO or Meyers'oB. The question submitted to Dickinson is Resolved, That corporations engaged in foreign or inter-state commerce should be licensed by the federal government and be subject to its control and supervision. Stoll, representative gS Forestry and Natural History, Dr. Fernow’s talk before the Natural History club had for its subject “Forestry as Related to Natural History.” Forestry, he said, bears an important relation to climate; the trees provide shade and act as windbreaks, while the roots prevent drought by retaining the rainfall. The forester of today is an educated lumberman, differing, however, in that he produces what the lumberman can but reap. Since it takes from twenty-five to forty years to produce a tree large enough for posts and ties, from sixty to a hundred years for saw-logs, sci entific forestry is a business which only governments and corporations can undertake. Few individuals cou'd live to reap the crop they had It is said that the students in the mining department dig for every thing they get. This is no civil remark.
