Open Letters. The STATE COLLEGIAN invites letters, but the publication of a communication does not necessarily imply the endorsement of the sentiments contained therein. As a guaran tee of good faith, the writer’s name must be signed, but will not be printed if so desired. The Honor System The honor system ! Are our stu dents then not honorable men ? Is it true that the students of this insti tution need to promulgate a system of honesty ? Answered in the af firmative what does it imply ? If our eight hundred students could line up before me all at the same time, and if I could point to each in turn in the presence of all of the others and say, “You are a cheat, you are a sneak, you are dis honest,” how many would acknow ledge it; how many would quietly sit down and say, ‘‘You’re right, I’m it ?” Yet that is just what is being done by every man who clam ors for the honor system. He is publicly announcing that he needs to be reformed. The village im provement society is formed to help create a better state of affairs in the village ; the reform party in politics is instituted in order to eradicate the dishonesty which is well known to exist in politics in general; the criminal is put upon the honor sys tem when he is told that by means of good behavior his sentence may be shortened. Do you see my point ? In all such cases the evil, whether of small importance or great, is there ; so then, let the Uni versity of Virginia, let Amherst Col lege, let any other institution main tain its honor system, but do not let us be classed with them; they do but proclaim their weakness; they but announce that they have within them an evil which they are unable to control. I would not try to interfere with any movement which might help to make our college the model institu tion in the country; it is with the THE STATE COLLEGIAN hope of attaining this end that I offer these suggestions. lam trying to show that the honor system is really only a cloak for the dishonest stu dent who calls to his support a throng of honest men, and that, by the way, is one of the favorite schemes of the devil. If every student in the Pennsylvania State College would put himself upon the honor system there would be no need to call upon the college to in stitute it. Ir matters not whether the profes sor of architecture, or the professor of language, or the professor of mental and moral science, or the professor of any other subject per mits the honor system to exist in his department; honesty is honesty ; dishonesty is dishonesty. The prescription necessary at present is your paid subscription. The mana gers are endeavoring to see all mem bers of the student body who re ceive the paper and who are thus far delinquent; but the managers are students, too, and are limited as to time. You can square yourself and assist them by mailing the amount, $1.50, to the State Collegian or by handing it to one of the managers. Checks should be made payable to the State Collegian. Do it now! Indoor Athletic Meet, The first of the series of indoor athletic meets will take place on Saturday evening in the Armory.
