"Jack" Elder, 'O4, another of State's former foot ball men and captain of the 1904 basebail team, was called upon and responded in an interesting manner. A. K. Little 'O7, editor-in-chief of the "Collegian" spoke of the aims of the students' paper, solicit ing the support of every man. The need of debaters from the Freshman class was strongly em phasized by G. W. Groff, 'O7, who set forth in an attractive manner the advantages to be gained in the work of debate. He also spoke regard ing the Inter-collegiate Debating League, composed of Swarthmore, Franklin & Marshall, Dickinson and State, mentioning the fact that State won the championship last year. After another song by the Glee Club, General Beaver talked in his usual interesting manner, speaking a good word for each of the organi zations which aim to make college life more attractive and more help ful. The program of the evening was closed with the singing of "Al ma Mater," after which refresh ments were served. Faculty. A considerable number of changes have been made in the Faculty dur ing the past summer. Several meb bers have been given leave of absence, and their places filled by new men, while others have left permanently for other fields. As mentioned in another column, Dr. J. P. Welsh, formerly of Bloomsburg State Nor mal, has been elected Vice-President, Financial Agent and Registrar of the College. Dr. Buckhout who was formerly Vice-President will give his attention wholly to the Agricultural Department. Dr, F. E. Tuttle, Professor of Qualitative Analysis in the chemis try department has left to assume charge of the chemistry department cif the Kentucky State College. His THE STATE COLLEGIAN old position will be filled by Dr. R. 0. Smith of Rutgers College and the University of Pennsylvania, who comes from the chemistry depart ment of the University of Wiscon- Two more vacancies in the same department have been caused by the resignation of R. N. Maxson, and J. B. Churchill, the latter hav ing been granted a year's leive of absence to pursue further study in chemistry in Germany. His place is being filled by B. R. Curry, 'O5. Prof. Surface of the Biology de partment is away on a year's leave of absence, W. R. McConnell 'O6 assuming charge during his absence. J. P. Kottcamp 'O4, who was re cently married to Miss Glenn 'O6, has vacated his position as Assist ant in Mechanical Engineering, which will now be occupied by E. B. Norris also of the class of 1904. Owing to the leave of absence granted Prof. F. E. Foss and the resignation of F. A. Gorham of the Civil Engineering department it has been found necessary to add to the force R. F. Webber of Purdue and J. C. Gotwals, 'O6. It will be re membered that the latter holds the John W. White fellowship for this year. Myron Creese 'O5, has accepted a position on the teaching staff of the Electrical Engineering depart ment. Prof. H. P. Wood, lately of the same department, has resigned to accept a position in the Electri cal Engineering school of another college. Prof. Gates of Harvard is a new man in the French department. He is taking the position left vacant by Miss Nichols. The Sub-Freshman class this year will be under the charge of Prof. A. H.
