State Defeats Swarthmore. On Thursday evening, Dec. 14th, our college debating team composed of H. M. Broucher, G. W. Groff, and C. R. Stahl won a victory from the same Swarthmore team which had won the champion ship of the Penna. Inter-collegiate League in 1904-5. The question discussed was : Resolved that United States Senators should be elected by direct vote of the people ; the affir mative being upheld by Slate and the negative by Swarthmore. For the debating of our opponents, Miss Caroline Hadley, Amos Peaslee, and A. L. Ryder, we have nothing but praise; their delivery was ex ceptionally good, and their argu ments were logical and well pre sented. It is to our own team, how ever, that the highest praise is due. Their arguments were delivered in a straight-from-the-shoulder style that won the favor of Judges and au dience from start to finish. The arguments were logic and unanswer able ; they were built up upon each other like the theorems of Geometry, and the rebutal of our opponents made little or no impression upon them. On the other hand the re butting of our own team was an at tack upon the negative arguments and showed careful preparation of both sides of the question. _ The debate, which was held in the Auditorium, was largely attended. Professor Pattee acted as chairman while the judges were as follows: Dr. Becht, of Clarion Normal School, Dr. Flickinger, of Lock Haven Normal School, and Prof. Pearson of the Wharton School of Finance, U. of P. A very pleas ing featuie was the playing of the newly organized Banjo, Mandolin and Guitar Club while the audience was awaiting the decision of the Judges. —Mallory, of Bellefonte, makes a portrait, not a map of your face.
