Clay and C. P. Ames. The concluding number was an exhibition basket ball game be tween the Varsity and the scrub. The committee left the college on their special at 9 :3o for Pittsburg. VISIT OF THE HOUSE COMMITTEE. On Friday, March .13th, the sub-committee on Appropriations of the House of Representatives, consisting of about thirty-two members, arrived at the College to look the place over. They arrived at 10 :35 on a special from Bellefonte, and at once prd ceeded to an inspection of the buildings. • Under the leadership of Representative Stulb, of Philadelphia, the chemistry building was first inspected. Here everything was gone over thoroughly, and Dr. Pond was given a good chance to impress the needs of the department upon the committee. President Atherton enter tained the committee at dinner, after which they proceeded to the engineering building. At 2 :45 the students assembled in the chapel. President Atherton made an address of welcome to the committee. In the course of his remarks he told how other state agricultural colleges had been compelled to take up engineering and other technical branches. He cited Michigan, lowa and Massachusetts. Pennsylvania State College has responded to the needs of the people. The men who come here are prepared to do the work of a life time, and not to loaf or idle away their time. He showed the first catalogue issued by the college and the one issued this year, and called attention to the marked difference in size. This gives some idea of the growth of the college during the past forty years. In the past we have struggled along with small appliances and cramped quarters. We must have more room. It is like a man with a large family and only one room to put them in. State college has only asked for what it has needed College Miscellany.
