In part , Governor Stone said: " I have been requested by the Commandant to present this sword to the captain of the best drilled company, corresponding to the decision of the judges. I, have also been requested to state that General Miller has been so enthusiastic over this drill that he has offered a second prize,' the nature of which he did not tell me." From here the visitors were escorted to the chapel, where General Beaver presided and spoke in behalf Of the college, as follows: "I wish to express the heartiest thanks for the college and all those connected with it to those gentlemen who have kindly come to look over our work. "All of the counties in this great Commonwealth are repre sented in thiS institution, except four, and they will likely be represented in a few weeks when our short course men come in. We are showing you, as representatives, what is being done upon the hearts and heads of our young men and women with the money which you have given , us. Remember, it is only the physical part that you see. Here, in this institution, are the minds that are to rule Pennsylvania in ,the future. They are to be the captains of industry. Governor Stone, if if you look over an account of a smoker, or some other social function, held by the alumni of State in your native county, you will find at least 100. At Youngstown, New Castle and Cleveland there are also large numbers. Indeed, I dare say that the majority of the steel made in this country is put out by graduates of State. In fact, you can scarcely go into any industry without seeing some State men. Although our ladies are few, they occupy a position of great influence. Not only are our men becoming captains of industry, but also, from what we have just seen in the armory, captains of the National Guard. We have with us the Commander-in-Chief of the Na tional 'Guard, whom I have the honor of announcing, Governor Stone."
