in the flag which symbolizes country should characterize every true citizen. The man who lacks them is a useless creature, a mere incumbrance to the land. Our college course is to train us so we may best be prepared to meet these purposes and to discharge our duties as citizens of this nation. We as col lege graduates should bring anew into American citizenship pure aspirations, with repugnance to shams, meanness, treachery and fraud, no matter by what euphemisms they may be described, nor by what partisan chiefs or caucuses they may be sanctioned. We should bring to our country in time of peace the same chivalric devotion which inspires us to the call of duty to meet in the field of battle, hardship, disease, wounds and death, only so that we may save our country and her cherished institutions from over flow. Let us each stand, whatever our calling, the educated Amer ican enforcing and illustrating the truest American principles. The honor of society, the vitality of patriotism, is in our keeping. Our college and its fruits will be judged by our characters and conduct. It is not by numbers and riches, by fashions and luxuri ous halls, that we can best be just to society and discharge our duties as members of the educated class. Then, and then only, do we truly serve her when we make her name beautiful and illus trious when we take care that purity in thought, thoroughness in education, accuracy in science, honesty in politics, stainlessness in morals and strict justice in all things are everywhere identical with the Pennsylvania State College. This commencement day presents to us a two-fold aspect, call ing up the past at the same time that it looks towards the future. A flood of recollection passes before us as we think of many pleas ant associations with others and of delightful companionship among ourselves during our four years' stay at State College. I will not dwell upon the past, rich as it is in the memories and precious opportunities which it has afforded. Our student days at college are behind us.
