STUDENT LIFE AT PENNSYLVANIA. -,\ 0 matter what university lie attends the Freshman is .... much the same fellow everywhere, and as he be comes familiar with university life lie will find the same general characteristics at one place as at another. The Freshmen at Pennsylvania, however, differ from all others in at least one respect—he is a Pennsylvania Freshman, and it is this fact alone which gives him recognition and makes him and his life, during his entire course, worthy of at least a few thoughts. The University of Pennsylvania was first conceived of as a free charitable school, by leading citizens of Pennsyl vania, prominent among whom was Benjamin Franklin. During the year 1751 a school was established and so suc cessful was its growth, that at the end of four years there had been added to it an academy and college. Under the able leadership of Dr. William Smith, the first provost, the institution rapidly advanced, but as time passed the need of uniting the three separated schools was greatly felt. It was, therefore, by this union in 1791 that the University of Penn sylvania was actually established. TI-1.4 HPART'S LONGING. R. 13.
