Owing to the interest taken in athletic matters we hare devoted more space than usual to that department. However we have not sacrificed any other matter to give precedence to this. Contributed. One of the most interesting illustrations of the applica tion of modern science and scientific methods to practical business is found in the recent appointment of a bacteriolo gist by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. “State” men are especially interested from the fact that the first appoint ment of this kind was of one of our own graduates. At first sight, it would seem as if a railroad company would have very little occasion for the services of such an official, but the following statement, made in answer to the inquiry of one of his friends, shows that that impression is altogether a mistaken one. He says: “Probably the most important problem I have to con sider is the examination of water supplies, as the officials wish to secure the best water available for passengers and employees. “The disinfection of passenger cars and stations is also an important problem which requires scientific supervision. Every coach and station is disinfected when there is any reason to suppose that it may be infected, and it is proposed to disinfect all coaches periodically. We have spent a number of months experimenting on methods of disinfection, and expect to soon publish our P. R. R. method, which we believe to be better than any other method yet proposed.” jg® dfc
