Cummings, ’95, a map of the new yards of the Illinois Central R. R. at New Orleans. Capt. E. H. Hubbard, of the Artillery Corps, the Government military inspector, made an inspection of the Battalion on Friday, May 18. After a general inspection of arms, the Battalion was put through the various movements in closed order. Capt. Hubbard expressed himself as very well pleased with the general ■ bearing and condition of the Battalion. At the opening of the season there was a good deal of uncertainty in the mind of the average State undergraduate as to the merits of the State baseball team. At the close of the first trip, resulting as it did in only one minor victory, two defeats, one tie game, and one game called off on ac count of rain, the State baseball crank'was inclined to shake his head, and make no bets on the White and Blue. Now, however, with the great record of seven successive victories (the last over a team mostly professional, which had not been beaten this year) staring him in the face, it is safe to say that every State man is convinced that the team is a winner, and one of'Which he may be justly proud. The team has in it the spirit that wins games, and their fine work on the trip substantiates the words of Captain Sharpe, “We tried to do our best.” The total score now stands State, 106—opponents, 63. There are but two more games to play,—the game with Susquehanna, and the Commence- Mandoliu Club. BASE BADE. P. Dresser. A. W: Noll. .Samuel Siegal.
