The Electrical Engineering Department has received from the Staten Island Electric Light and Power Co., twenty-one trans formers of various capacities and pressUres at a nominal price. We are indebted to Wm. B. Jackson, '9O, chief engineer of the company, for this valuable acquisition. G. J. Yundt, '99, and H. P. Wood, '99, have invented and nearly completed a frequency indicator by which the frequency of an alternating current may be measured with a minimum error. Their method is to arrange a string so that it will produce a musical tone. By means of calibrations, they then directly read the frequency of the current from the instrument. We are pleased to be able to announce that Dr. Taliaferro has recovered from his illness and is again able to attend to his duties as an instructor. All of the steam heat radiators in the Main Building were re painted during the holidays. B. J. Thompson, 'oo, has charge of the arc-lights on the campus in place of G. F. Taylor, 'oo, who did not return this session. A number of students were unable to be present at the opening of the term on account of sickness. Prof. and Mrs. G. C. Butz entertained a number of their friends .on New Year's eve. On Friday evening, Dec, 30, 'the members of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity held a reception for their friends. An attempt is being made to harmonize gymnasium and mili tary work. A request has been sent to Dr. Newton by the Philadelphia papers, to send a photograph and sketch of the strongest man in college. In order to determine this a special series of strength tests will be conducted by him in the near future. A lecture on Savonarola will be delivered before the Woman's Literary Club by Lawrence M. Colfelt, D. D., some time in Feb ruary. Literature has been substituted for the History of Civilization which has heretofore been taught this session. Mr. Gerald Stanley Lee, who will occupy the college pulpit for the remainder of the year, was graduated from the Yale Divinity School in 1888. Since that time he has acquired a wide ruputa-
