T HE FREE LANCE enters the New Year under a slightly changed staff, due to the resignation of G. J. Yundt, '99, editor-in-chief. W. L. Affelder, '99, has been appointed acting editor-in-chief ; W. H. Thomson, '99, has been elected an associate editor; D. E. Wentzel, 'oo, has been appointed business manager; and C. E. Denny, 'oo, assistant manager. THE following rating of the Eastern college foot ball teams— Harvard, Princeton, Univ. of Penn'a, Yale, Cornell, Wes- leyan, Brown, State, Dartmouth, and Williams—Wch was published in the Dec. 22 number of Leslie's Weekly, verifies our claim to the State inter-collegiate championship, for of the ten there is but one Pennsylvania team other than our own—that of the Univ. of Penn'a, which being classed as one of the " Big Four," is not classed with the intercollegiate association. In the Dec. 17 number of Harper's Weekly, Caspar Whitney said: " Dart mouth, Illinois, Univ. of Cincinnati, Minnesota, and Pennsylvania State appear to be pretty much of a class notwithstanding some discrepancies in scores. I should be inclined to place Illinois at the head of this group. Pennsylvania State made an excellent • record." We did indeed make an excellent record, but this fact alone is by no means an assurance that we will do so again next year. Since •the foot ball season closed, our prospect of having equal success next fall has rapidly grown more and more dim. Three of the Varsity squad did not return to college this session, three will be graduated next June, 'and there is a possibility of several others not being here next year. Although the present outlook is not very encouraging, there is an efficient remedy which, if its .0 .0 .0
