    THE W. AND J.-STATE GAME
FOR the first time in four years Washington and Jefferson was
defeated on her ovvn ;grounds, and to us belongs the
distinc
tion of administering that defeat. • Encouraged by several
successful seasons, W. and was *beginning to consider herself
invulnerable,
,but like Achilles 'she had one vulnerable spot—her
centre—and it did not take our team long to become aware of that

In the first half Thompson kicked off to Randolph 'who ad
vanced 8 yards, 30 yards were gained by Sdholl and Hayes on the
the,guard,s back play, Hayes skirted 'right end for In yards to W.
and J.'s 20-yard line, bat lost the ball on a fumble. W. and ff.
fumbled without gaining, State advanced the ball to within 2
. yards of the goal, and Maxwell went through the line for a 'touch

Thompson kicked off to State's 15 -yard line, State made 30
yards on the guards back formation and then lost the ball on A
fumble. Collins went around 'State's end and Mathews through
the line, netting 25 yards, but W. and J. lost the ball 'on downs
on State's i5 -yard line. After several gains of• three and .five
yards, Hewitt, who had been substituted for Hayes, went around
the right end for 18 yards. The interference was excellent. After
K.:Core had tackled Randolph for a 5 yard loss, State lost the
ball at the centre of the field on downs. Collins went around the
right 'end for 12 yards, and the ball was carried by successive
gains to State's 20-yard line. State lost 5 yards for off-side play
ing, but got 'the ballnn her /5 -yard line through W. and J.'s off
side play. After, gaining x 5 yards, State lost the ball on downs.
Collin. and Mathews advanced the ball to within 2 yards of State's'
goal and Mathews made a touchdown and kicked ,goal. Score—
State 6; W. and J. 6.
