way. Our naval heroes of all decades were given discriminating eulogies, and references to those whose names are yet new to ears of the world were received with much enthusiasm. While the judges, Rev. J. O. Denniston, Mr. H. V. White and Rev. J. W. White, were in retirement, the patriotism of the audi ence found vent in singing the Star Spangled Banner. The col lege rang with the inspiring strains of orchestra and chorus. The decision was awaited with considerable interest as the col lege this year offered a second prize of ten dollars in addition to the usual one of twenty-five dollars. And when the Rev, J. O. Denniston announced that Mr. D. E. Carpenter had. been awarded the first prize and Mr. H. H. Mallory the second, the audience— that larger body of critics who had no formal vote—expressed in a quiet way their genuine approval. Dancing this year formed the principal part of the week’s gay eties and on Monday evening there were no less than six of these delightful affairs.
