1896.] The Blue and 'White on the Diamond. Mr. Hugh Beaver conducted the Y. M. C. A. meeting, Sun.- day evening, April 26th. Mr. Beaver is a graduate of State and is now State secretary of the college Y. M. C. A.'s His talk was highly appreciated. The imported models of blast furnaces and coke Ovens have reached us and are now installed in the Mining Department rooms. They are handsome and instructive additions to the illustrative material of the college. A reception was given at the 141 House, Monday evening, April 27th. The patronesses were Mrs. Gabriel Hiester, Mrs. Wm. Thompson and Mrs. H. H. Stoelc. Our campus will have an additional attractive feature during commencement week of this year. Ground has been broken for the foundation of the geologic obelisk and every indication points to a rapid completion. The foundation block has already been subjected to a test of strength, for while being loaded on the cars preparatory to shipment it fell from its blocks, thirty feet to the railroad track without suffering any further injury than the chip. ping of a corner. The quarry furnishing this stone is also sup , plying the pier material for the great Hudson river bridge now erecting between New York City and jersey City. The Seniors appeared at chapel Sunday, April 15th, in caps and gowns. The custom of wearing these garments as a mark of those who are completing their course at their Alma Mater is practiced in all the leading colleges, and it is'eminently proper that it should be practiced at Slate. '96 is the first class in three years to wear caps and gowns. It is hoped the custom will be continued here. THE BLUE AND WHITE ON THE DIAMOND. STATE COLLEGE, II; W. AND J., 6. The base ball season opened here on April 14, when State de feated Washington and Jefferson with the score r z to 6.
