The Lance will award $lO for the best story and $5 for the best poem illustrative of life at Slate, submitted before November r, 1895. The story must contain from 2,000 to 3,000 words. The three senior editors will judge the merits of productions submitted. After a short vacation, with its pleasures and pains, it is very pleasant for the jolly college student to be back again, enjoying the pleasures and associations of our attractive Alma Mater. The Free Lance gladly greets the old students and tenders a hearty welcome to the new. The main object of this opening issue is to announce to the new students the existence of this paper—the Free Lance — published by the students in the interest of the students. At all times has it been the organ of the under-graduates and Alumni, and we present it to you now a better representative than it has ever been before. IT is important that all students join the Athletic Association. Every true college man will take an active interest, if not an active part, in college athletics.
