—Dr. Atherton has been made First Councillor of the American Academy of Political and Social Science. —The Seniors are hard at work over their military theses which Lieut. McCaskey requires them to write this term. —Dr. H. T. Fernald has been elected Director of the Cold Spring Harbor (L. I.) Marine Lab oratory for the summer vacation. —The eclipse of the moon, which took place on the evening of March ioth, could not be seen at the College owing to a cloudy sky. —The Senior mechanicals went to Bellefonte on Feb. 23rd, to make a twenty four hour test of the engines of an electric light plant. —On March 9th, the Senior mining engineers accompanied by Prof. Harry Stoek, went to Scotia to inspect the ore washing plant of that place. —The valve of the Westingiiouse engine in the Mechanic Arts Building broke on the evening of Feb. 23rd, but was repaired after some trouble. —The College Glee and Banjo clubs gave their opening concert in chapel, on Feb. 23rd. The house was well filled and.every selection received hearty applause. —A reception was given to the Senior class and friends, Friday, March Bth, at Prof. T. W. Kin kaid’s residence. An enjoyable evening was spent by all present. —Brakes with water cooling appliances are be ing fitted on the Corliss engines in the Engineer ing building, and a number of tests are to be made as soon as these are finished. THE FREE LANCE. —The following nine members of the Senior class have been elected junior members of the State College Scientific Association : E. P. Har der, Budd Gray, R. L. MacDonald, H. M. Beav er, R. W. Wieland, G. D. Green, C. W. Burkett, B. B. Hortyn, and J. G. Marshall. •'yjSuLi-V.'' l -' —On the evening of Feb. 22 the Adelphi club held a reception and dance at University Inn. About twenty five couples danced in the spacious dining hall to the excellent music rendered by the Italian orchestra. As usual it was one of the most important social events of the season. —A number of excellent literary productions were received in response to the prize of five dol lars offered by the Lance for the best short story. The judges being unable to decide between those of VV. H. Teas and H. H. Allen of the class of ’97, awarded a prize of three dollars to each. —A musicale was given by Miss Willard, assist ed by Miss McClelland and Messrs. McCaskey, Gray, Hardt and Patterson, in the college chapel on the evening of March 14th. The music was greatly enjoyed by the audience, and Miss Willard is to be congratulated for the excellent entertain ment provided. —The College Glee and Banjo clubs started Feb. 28th, on their preliminary tour, visiting in order, Bellefonte, Lock Haven, Towanda, Wil liamsport and Jersey Shore. There will probably be also a trip to Harrisburg before the regular Easter tour. The clubs this year are finer than State has ever before produced. —Work on the base-ball team for next term is progressing finely.
