U. OF VA. GAME. The first game of the season was played wi'h the University of Va., on their home grounds. A game was to have been played with the Columbia Athletic club the day before, but rain preventing, it was postponed till Monday the 16th. This left our team fresh to tackle the Virginians, and in conse quence we came off victorious 6-o. Like the game with the Athletic Club two days later, it was a slugging match, but the Varsity boys treat ed us like gentlemen compared with the treatment we received from the Washington people. Both sides were to blame for the roughness, but the greatest fault was the umpire's who should have ruled the men off. Atherton was ruled off in the second half, and while he was standing at the side lines, some crack brained spectator crawled under the ropes and knocked him down with a blow on the back of the head. Capt. Haley im mediately called our men from the field and de manded the game, and although there was still twelve minutes to play with the ball in' our terri tory Capt. Penton gave us the victory. After the excitement was over numerous apologies were made, and the better element of the school ex pressed great regret that such a thing should have occurred. College Topics, the University weekly, goes over the men rough shod for the occurrence, and can hardly find words strong enough to con demn both it and the slugging in the game. The play was as follows : State wins the toss and chooses the ball, Atherton making 8 yards in the V. Fay fails to gain. So Haley takes the ball 5 yards around the end, and on Fay's sec ond failure again makes 5. Brown loses 4 yards in an attempt to buck the.centre, but from that on short gains are made till Virginia's 25 yard line is reached. Here Brown fumbles and Rams burg gets the ball. Whaley then kicks and gets the ball on Haley's fumble, but the Virginians being unable to advance, he kicks again, Ather ton catching on our 3o yard line and making 15 yards before being downed. Then our boys slowly force the ball to Virginia's 20 yard line with splendid interference, only to lose it. on 4 ''HE FIZEE LANCE. downs. Johnson then makes 15 yards for Vir ginia around the left end, but Atherton tackles so hard that Johnson drops the ball, Atherton pick ing it up and making a touchdown. He also kicks the goal. Time 20 minutes. Whaley makes 8 yards in Virginia's V, and Jones follows with 5 ; but Ramsburg, Jones and Johnson can't gain, and our boys take the ball. They quickly take it to the centre of the field, and it looks as if another touchdown would be made ; but Fay fumbles and Massie drops on it. Johnson makes 8 yards and Jones 5, but after 3 unsuccessful downs Whaley is forced to kick. Time is called almost immediately afterward. P. S. C. 6. U. nf V. o In the second half "Johnnie" Poe, Princeton's old star, who is coaching the Virginians, relieves Jones. Whaley makes r 2 yards on the V. Ramsburg is hurt and Allen replaces him. Whaley loses two yards, and Poe is tackled in his tracks by Harris losing two yards more. Whaley kicks to our 25 yard line, and our man is downed. Failing to gain, Brown punts to the centre of the field, and Whaley catches. Virginia is making short gains and the ball is about on our 3o yard line when the disgraceful occcurrence before al luded to took place and the game is called and given to us, 60. It was improbable that Virginia would score, and,' as there were only twelve min utes of play I:ft, our side would have been corn. pelted to play hard to do likewise, so that 6-o is a fair estimate of the respective strengths of the two teams. Time of half i 8 minutes. Atherton, Ha ley, Harris and White put up a fine game, while our line men all did well. The teams lined up as follows : U. of Va. POSITION. . P. S. C. Price right end White. Hicks ..right tackle Dowler. Penton (Capt.) right guard Wolf. Early centre Hoskins. Massieleft guard Fisher. . . Harrisburg (Allen) left tackle Dunmore. Bowden left end Harris. Hoke quarter Atherton. Johnson right half (Capt.) Haley, Jones (Poe) left half Fay. Whaley . full Brown. Touchdown, Atherton ; Goal, Atherton. Time of Ist half, 3o minutes; second half; x 8 minutes. Umpires, Mr. Allen.
