The La Vie Artist is here and at work. The', base ball team has had its photograph It is not generally known that Taylor was formerly a cowboy in Kansas. A series of protracted meetings began in the Methodist church on Jan. 25. Miss Thornton returned on Jan. 25th, from her vacation. She reports having had a very nice time. The drills for deepening the well at the engine house have rapidly been placed in position and have begun work. The editor of the "La Vie" are busily engaged in getting the Annual prepared. In order to fa cilitate their work they have been excused from all military exercises. Miss Pemberton gave a Progressive Angling party to some of the elite of the college and town on Jan. The party was given in honor of Mrs. Additz who was visiting Miss Pemberton. On the evening of Jan. i 8 a fire was discover el in the Presbyterian church. The fire had gained considerable headway between the floor and the ceiling of the room below. The vigorous use of an axe and the prompt application of snow and water soon extinguished the fire. The mineralogy department has recently had a very valuable addition by the purchase of the Capt. John Williams collection of Chester, Pa. The purchase was made through Prof. Tuttle. It consists of minerals of a very great variety, among which the different iron ores are especially valuable. The ladies of the institution attend the gymna sium on several days of the week and are becom ing familiar with the uses of the various pieces of apparatus. We are sorry however to mention an accident which occurred to one of them which caused a pain . ful injury to the young lady's shoulder. THE FREE LANCE. LOCALS. By the way in which some of the Seniors spend their evening in star-gazing, they ought to make good recitations in astronomy. A new whist club has organized named "The Triangle," containing a number of memberi of the obl "Germania." McLean, Pres. ; Herr, Sec. ; Hile, Referee ; also it has as members a number of the Faculty. We are in lather bad luck as to holidays this year. Th: 22111 of February cons on Sunday, while the 3oth of May comes on Saturday. We think we should be allowed to have the 27th of February to celebrate . Longfellow's birth. The mechanical engineering Seniors have fin ished a fifteen horsepower "Ide" engine. This is the first engine of any size that the students have constructed, The engine will be used in running the models that belong to the department. The Christian Endeavor Society of the Presby teritn church gave a sociable on the evening of Jan. 24th. Although there were not many per sons present, the reception was highly enjoyed by the students. All the students are interested in the series of lectures proposed and arranged by President Ath erton. If the students can have such lectures it will prove a great benefit. Each department of the government at Washington will be represent ed and discussed, also the State government will be a subject of discourse. Lectures of this kind will afford a source of much information and will give the students no small amount of general • knowledge of our government. There seems to be a new interest awakened in our Literary societies. This has been noticable during the last several months, and it is with pleasure that we look upon the improvements which have come into existence in this important branch of college training. There is no part of a man's work at an in stitution which better develops his views and which better enables him to express them.
