Messrs. Newburn, Heppenstall and Spensz, of Pittsburg, visited their sons at P. S. C. recently. Prof. Buckhout was present at the last meet, ing of the State Forestry Commission held at Philadelphia. Miss Anna T. Peabody, of Salem, Mass, has for some time past been visiting at the pretty home of our President, Dr. Atherton. Misses Martha Keller, Blanche Hays and Caroline Orvis, of Bellefonte, attended the reception given by the Beta Theta Pis. Dur ing their stay at college they were the guests of Mrs. Jas. Y. McKee. John G. Mitchell, formerly of ’9O, who has for the past season been pitching on the Minneapolis team, has returned to his home in State College to spend the winter. Charles H. Musser is studying medicine at the Jefferson Medical College instead of the University of Pennsylvania as stated in our last number. COLLEGE ORBIT, The University of Michigan has 2,100 names enrolled upon its list of students. The sod has been turned for the new ath letic field at Amherst. The Christmas vacation at Yale lasts three weeks. THE FREE LANCE. One hundred thousand dollars is being raised to endow a chair of Protection at Yale, through which the free-trade teachings of Prof, William G. Sumner are to be combated. The cane rush between 140 Freshmen and some 60 Sophomores of Lehigh resulted in an easy victory for the Freshmen. The Harvard Observatory is to have a new $50,000 photographic telescope, the gift of Miss C. W. Bruce, of New York. No student will be allowed to return to Lafayette without pledging himself to abstain from hazing. In the Pardee scientific depart ment of the college a course in electrical en gineering will be opened this term. An Oberlin professor’s text-book was found on the campus not long since, and on the margin was written the following: “ Use joke No. 17 in connection with this paragraph.” One of the professors of the University is giving the students weekly lessons in singing college songs. Prof. William Appleton, of the Greek chair, has been elected to succeed Dr. Magill as President of Swarthmore. Dr. Daniel Ayers has given $25,000 to wards the endowment of a chair of Biology in Wesleyan University. Prof. Richards, of Yale, having examined the records of 2,425 students finds that the athletes fall very slightly behind the non athletes in scholarship, The chapter of Alpha Delta Phi at Am herst has established a fund of $5,000 for a fellowship in history and political economy. Regular military instruction is to be given to the Sheffield Scientific School students at Yale. Lieut. Totten, 4th Artillery, U. S. A., will have charge of the course.
