W- e.M'i.t aff.id To forget our dead would not blot out the remembrance of our civil war. Hut It would add to that calamity the crime of ingratitude. Un speakably horrible as civil war is, it is sometimes unavoidable. They who bear part in it arc not ncccssariry less worthy of honor than others. Nor is the keeping green of the memory of the fallen incom patible with the restoration and mainten ance of rod ibelinir. Passions seldom ran hiirhcr than in England during her civil wars. Contempt is seldom stronger than was that held ly the Cavalier toward the Puritan, or by the adherents of King William toward the tools and sy cophants of James. Yet bitter as were those iiud:-, all Englishmen are to-day that to tbe J.o:tg Parliament and fo William. England owes her liberties. So v. ill it oe with us. Even those who de nied the authority of the government to decree emancipation now rejoice in the fact that all are free, and as they conld not restore slavery if they would, so they would not if they could. When a, new generation rises in the Soath, when ths direct inflnence of a civilization involving the relation of master and slave shall be no more, the men of South Carolina and the men of Massachusetts will look on the great civil war as the agent of perpetua ting the freedom and the greatness of America. The happiness and peace and prosperity which they shall enjoy t'oey will aiirec in attributing to the fact that rre endured the toils of civil strife. We nurse no vision of seeing that har mony in our day, but the chi is possibly born who may see it. Nor is the time lung. The span of human life, even at three score years and ten. is not a long era in tbe lile of a nation. So then lot us honor the fallen. The grave of our soldier is not the nation's discord, but her peace and harmony. When we, too, shall sluaibcr at his side, I t li 's who come after us will assume our iaz of honoring his resting place. It is nut for his sake that we cast flowers on his toinh. lie sleeps. He knows not wrat we do. His widow and orphan, or bowed sire and matron, drop their tears on the myrtle or the ivy that adorn his grave, liut he is not moved. No tears trickle along his cheek. No response comes from his lips. He partook the dangers, he bore the toil, but when the victory came, he was absent, dead. We could not have him and victory. As our treasure cost the fallen soldier the inesti mable price of his life, we ought to prize it all the more. It remains to us to care for his livinc: and wounded comrade, to love cur country and obey her laws, and make her th3 very palladium of freedom, of justice and of good government.
