Tlie Farmers' Department. Killing Timber. There is nothing connected with farming, in a new and wooded country, which makes so munifi cent a return lor money expended, as dead ening timber on land several yeara iQ ad vanco of clearing it Of course, on mov ing upon timbered land, tho first thing in order i3 to provide 8 dwfi-og nr. 1 s-'r.c-I.vr for the stock," with a muvu,: around each t:; rrcvt.nt ttm-s ir-.-.u 'Z j tj ! upon them M.r.5jJ throw dow:j si'." ia f.iO r. i c.'iu 's.e i pre'iri)iT..T;:0' attended ground at ia to bo clear within a f:.v v.rn, u. commenc? iriitcg i c so much -m is ue-.-d:''! 'J 1; o;i ? s u '. t a timber or rails, may I e leli int. ct, but all iho rest shuuldbe girdUJ. ia fcix ur sev- ca years, if the timber be hard, the trees will have died, the limbs have iulleu to the ground and rotted there, rvith a por tion cf the bolls abo, adding much to the fertility of the soil. E!der3 may spring up, but these are -easily removed when clearing time comes. In chopping this deadened timber, much of it will be broken up in falling, thus materially lightening the labor of clearing. Such stumps as th3 fire spares cau be readily removed and burnt, thus preparing the way for the im mediate introduction of the plow. By this preliminary labor the land will be render ed fully thirty per cect. better than it would be were the timber chopped and cleared off in a green state. Ia wooded sections, not remote frcm villages crcilie?, actual or in prospect, or traversed by railroads cr likely soon to be, this mode of clearing would not be advis able, as the wood will pay largely above the cost of cutting and hauling to market. But when no such chance is presented, and that timber u to be felled and burnt on the ground, girdling is the true policy, for the reason already assigned. It savea time and crpense, and gives much better returns for the labor bestowed. Till: Saw. The saw is an instrument of very ancient origin. We Cud it men tioned ia the book of Isaiah at the period cotemporaneous with the buildingcf Home. It is represented on the obelisks of Egypt, and was in use among the Egyptians a thousand years before the days of Isaiah. The Greeks ascribe thcinvention of the saw to Daedaalus, or his pupil Talus; but it is certainly of a more ancient date. Saw mills were erected in Germany in the fourth century; ia the Island of Madcria in 1-120; at Breslau, in Austria, in 1-132; and in 1430 the first one in Norway was built. These were followed by many others all over Europe. The saw mill, as a mechanism for cutting timber, had not been in use very long in some countries before the settlement of America. The early mode practiced by the Amer ican colonists of manufacturing boards and planks was either to saw them by hand or split them from the log, and then finish by hewing with an ax. The first saw mill erected in New England was in New Hampshire, near Portsmouth, some time previous to the year 1G31. The first miil in Massachusetts was'built about the year 1G3. This wss some yeara before the saw mill was introduced into England. An enriy account of Now York, published in 1703, speaks of Dutch built mills for eawing timbers, one cf which would do more woik ia an hour than fifty men in two days. Saw mills were erected on Manhattan Island as early as 1033. A 6aw mill, down to the close of the last cen tury, was fjuite a simple affair, and a mill that then cost 8500 was considered better than the average. Watering Houses. Horses should never be kept so long without water that they will drink largely when they get it. Give it to them often, and tbey will never injure themselves with it. Nothing is more common than to hitch a tpam to the plough, nnd make them work half a day without a drop. What man would submit to such treatment? If the plough i3 start ed at seven in the morning, water should be given nguiu befors ton, and tigaiu in the after-noon by four o'clock. Even if half an hour is thus consumed, more woik will be done in a day. The objection that horses on the road should not be "loaded with water" is not valid. A horse weigh ing 1,200 pounds will not be much cu cumbered additional by twenty pounds of water, while the distension will give him additional strength. Every farmer knows that when he himself undertakes to lift a large log or heavy etone, he can do more by first inflating himself with air, and not unfrequently he loses a button or two from his jantaloons in the operation. Some degree of inflation -by water will add to a horse's strength in a similar way. In driving a horse on the road at a natural gait of i;ine or tcu miles an hour, I have frequently had occasion to observe that he was laboring with desperation until I let him drink freely, when ho ceased to svreat and evideuti!y travelled more freely. Don't be afraid lo give your horso vu.icr ; the danger is in making them abstain too long, in which case care is needed. In the Western Penitentiary, during last year, tho social relation of the pris oners were, single, two hundred and fifty; married, one hundred and sixty ; widower, twenty-seven. This cshibic speaks wll for wedded life. The report abo .s aws that there were one hundred and uint.fy threo laborera imprisoned: shoemakers, nineteen; carpenters, twenty-two, a ;! farmers, eeventeen. These four bru- r of industry are the most largely rc rt.-cu'-ed, and, save the latter, are handy jtv-ers to have in the institution. ABRAHAM BLAINE, llarl.,r E;u:ns.bc!;o, Pa.
