as TZio farmer'i Iepurtnicut. Stock Fkedino. The foundation of pood farming is the keeping of 88 much rtock a can be kept well, and no more; but some farmers make the mi-take of overstocking their farms, by which means their stock feed on poor pasturage, and in a drought frequcutly suffer for the want of food. In the winter seuou too many cattle are crowded into small barnyard?, and the result is that the strongest ones cat the most of the fodder, and the small er and weaker animals are hooked about and have to take up with the leaving of the others ; and when all are provided with stalls, some portion of tho stock suffers when let into the yard, in consequence of there being too many for the space allotted them, especially in stormy weather, when tbey all strive to get uuder the sheds. A great deal of stock can bo advanta geously kept on most farms, if proper means are taken for their comfort and sup port. In the first place, the necessary change of pasture must be provided suffi cient to sustain tho Mock in a severe drought, if one should occur; or good crops should be grown to "soil" the cat tle when the pasturage is too short. The "soiling" system alone is often made to support a large number of cows on farms that could not give pasturage for half the number, and allow sufficient winter fodder to be cut. la the next place, ample aad warm ac commodation must be provided so that the stock can feed in shed quietly when not tailed ; and with an abundance of good fodder every farmer will fiod that keeping stock is prohiaole, as it is admitted by all good farmers that fodder fed on farms is better than to sell it, as the manure pro duced by the Btock keeps such farms in a good state of fertility. Every farmer should raise all the jonng stock that he can feed well and give good winter quarters. A choice lot of good dairy cows can seldom be bought ; they must be raistd on the farm As regards the breed of cows to be kept, if butter be the object, the A-der-neys, or their grades, arc considered best io proportion to the quantity of food con sumed. This .is a email breed of cattle, and their milk is exceedingly rich. They do not produce more milk than ordinary cows, but it yields much more cream. If the selling of milk be: the object, the Ayrshire are the. best breed that can be procured, as the cows of that breed have a world wide reputation of being the best milkers known. In many cases, however, our native cows are equal in value for both milk and butter to any blooded stock in existence, but such cows are scarce, and cannot be found for 6ale, except in rare cases. For workiog oxen, the hardy Devoos are most popular, as that breed will thrive on pasturage where the Durhams would barely exist Rural American. tm Gathering Fkuit. The appearance and value of fruit depeud very much up on when and how it is gathered. Poaches should bo left on the trees un til fully ripe, and then gathered carclully with thumb and finger and at once laid into the basket or box in which they are to be marketed. If the bloom is rubbed oil the peach by rouh handling, its beau ty of appearance ii injured and it will de cay much sooner thati if untouched. For merly it was supposed that the peach must be trathered before ripe in order to ship it any distance ; but practical expe rience has proved that ripe fruit not quite bolt, will carry just a9 well as unripe, and command a niuoh belter price. 1'carB and apples should never be pick ed from the tree by breaking the stems. Unless tho s'em will separa:e freely lrom the tree, the fruit is not ripe; it wil nei ther cat nor cook good, and is only fit for those vbo want a'touch of cholera mor bus. Apples, as saon as gathered, may be sent direct to market; but Dearly every . variety of pear is improved in appearance and quality by kcepiug iu close dark draw ers, wrapped in flannel or soft paper, or packed in Dran a few days. For profir, aud ia order to obtain the highest price, all fruit pays to be assorted into two or more grades. A few scatter ing large berries, apples or pears, in a quart or a bushel, do not assist in advanc ing the price ; but if carefully packed by themselves will briug the highest price, and often induce the dealer to buy the small fruit in order to get the large. Greasing Wauons. But lew people are aware that they do wagons aud car riages more injury by greasing toj plen tifully than in any other way. A well made whetl wi.l endure common wear from ten to twenty-five years, if care is ta keu to uso the right kind and proper amount ot grease: but if this is not at tended to, they will be used up in fire or six year. Lard should never be used on a waron, fur it will penetrate the hub and work its w.iy out arouud the tenons of the spokes, and spoil the wheel.
