S2S The Clotiies Line Telegraph. -In the early part of 1SG3, when the Uuioa army was encamped at Falmouth and picketing the Rappahannock, the utmost tact and ingenuity were displayed by the scouts and videttes in gaining a knowlede of contemplated movements on cither side, aai here, as at various other times, the shrewdness of the African camp attendants was very remarkable. One circumstance, in particular, shows how quick the race are in the art of com municating by signals. There came into the Union lines a negro from a farm on the other side of the liver, known by the name of Pabnev, who was found to possess a remarkably c!eaj knowledge of the topography of the whole region; and he was employed as cook and body servant at headquarters. Y.'hen he firt-t saw our systems of army telegraph?, the idea interested Lim intensely, uud he begged the operator to erplaiu the signs to him. They did so and found that ho could understand and remember 'he mean ing of the various movements as well as cny of his brethren ot paler hue. Tot long after, his wife, who had come with him, expressed a great anxiety to be allowed to go over to the other side as servant to a "eeeesh wouiia," whom Gen. Iiooker was about sending over to her friends". The request wua granted. Dub ney's wife went across the Itappahanncck, and in a few days was duly iustalied as laundress at the headquarters of u promi nent rebel General. Dabuey, her hustaud, on the north bank, was eoon found to be wocderfully well informed u to all the rebel plans. "Within an hour of the time that a movement of any kind was projec ted, or even diecusssd among the rebel Generals, Iiooker knew all about it. He knew which corps was moving, or about to move, in what direction, how long they had been on the march ; and in what force; and all this knowledge came through Dabney, aad his reports all turned out to be true. Yet Dabney wa3 never absent, and never talked with the scouts, and seemed to be always taken up with his duties as cook and groom at headquarters. How he obtained hi3 information re mained for eomo time a puzzle to the Union officers. At length, upon much lolicitation, he unfolded his marvellous secret to one of our officers. Taking him to a point where a clear view could be obtained of Fredericksburg, he pointed out a little cabin in the suburbs near the river bank, and asked him if he saw that clothed line with cbthes hanging on it to dry. "Well," said he, '-'that clothes line tells me in half an hour ju-t what goes on at Lee's headquarters. You eee my wife over there ; she washes for the officers, and cooks and waits round, and as soon as she hears about any move ment or anything going on, ehe comes down and moves the clothes pu the line so that I can understand it in a minute. That grey shirt is Longetreet's, and when ehe takes it off it means he's gone down about Richmond. That whitehhirtmeacs Hill, and when she moves it up fo the west tiid of the line, Hill's corps has moved up the stream. That led one is Stonewall'; he's down on the right now, and if he moves she will move that red Ehirt." One morning Dabney came in and re ported a movement over there. "Rut," Bays he, "it don't amount to anything. They're just making believe." An cliicer went out to look at the clothes line telegraph through his field glass. Thero had been quite a shifting over thers among the army flannels. "But how do you kcow there is something ia it ?" "Do you see those two blankets planed tegf thcr at the bottom '" asked Dabney. "Yes, but what of it?" said the officer. "Why, that's her way of making her sh trap; and when she pins the clothes together in that way, it meaus that Lee is only trying to draw us into his ih trap." As long as the two armies lay watching each other on opposite banks cf tht; stream, Dabney, with las clothes line telegraph, continued to fce one of the promptest aad most reliable d Lien. Hooker 6 scouts. TYrooiiAriiicAL Iloratona. A ITew York letter writer thus sketches ji few typographical errors: One day lust year, 2dr. Greeley wro'e on editorial entitled "William II. Seward." Imagine his rage when it came to him in proof headed "Richard the Third !" Vet anybody familiar with his chirography, if his inky jerks can be so designated, will readily' tee, not only how such a mistake could be made, but how it would be. Agaiu he wrote about "three men in buckram," and the prosaic type-setter got it "three men in a back room." And this, notwithstanding the f; two compositors of engacit' and ict that exneri- ence are hired at an extra .salary, because they can read bis copy. Rut George Ripley has been the victim of the grossest outrages in this line. In one of hi book notices he took the liberty of quoting from Shakspearc. "'Tts true, 'tis pity; and pity 'tis, 'tis true." And the wretch ed bungler get it, "Tis two, 'tis fifty; 'tis fifty 'tis fifty-two !" That is some worse than James F. Babcock's martyrdom, when he wrote "Is there no balm in Gil ead ?' and read the next morning, to his consternation, "Ia there no barn in Guil ford V Mr. Crawford, a member of Parliament, recently sent to India the message, "the news from America fivors the holders," and it arrived there with the information that "news from America savors of soldiers !" f .
