These were attended by physicians from
Altoona, Greensburg, Latrobe, Somerset,
Florence, and those resident among us,
and no effort was spared to make every
sufferer as comfortable- as possible.
Oo-aturdayvening, a meeting of.
citizens took place at the square, for the
relief of the sufferers. Tho meeting was
presided over by the Burgess, Mr. Kope
lin, who briefly and touchiogly stated the
object of the meeting. Committees were
appointed to collect funds in each ward
and district, and Howard J. Roberts was
made Treasurer of the funds.
Mr. T). J. Morrell stated that he had
received five hundred dollars from Presi
dent Johnson, seut frum Altoona, and
also that h3 had the draft of Gen. Geary
for two hundred dollars, for the relief of
poor sufferers. The some gentleman sub
scribed two hundred dollars for self, and
"pledged the Cambria Iron Company for
one thousand dollars more.
A uumber of gentlemen went forward
and. handed in money during the meeting,
swelling the amount to same twentv-three
hundred dollars. A large sum will be
raised during the week, as a resolution
unanimously passed the meeting that ev
ery citizen of town give the proceeds of
one day's labor or business Monday the
day fixed to the common fund.
The following letter accompanied Pres

D. J. Morrf.ll, Esq., Johnstown, Pa. Sir;
I am requested by Andrew Jolinsou (who

I am, sir, Very respectfully, yours,

Gen. Geary's letter donating 200 was
as follows :
Jouxstowx, Pa., P ept. 15, I860.
D. J. Morrell, Esq. My Dear Sir: While
on my way from Pittsburg to llarrisburg this
morning, I was shocked and grieved at the
intelligfrnce of tho terrible accident of yes
terday. I find among the killed and woun
ded many of my personal friends and neigh

latter and to the relations o the former my
heartfelt sympathies. I enclose my draft for
two hundred dollirs, which I respectfully ask
that you will distribute among the sufferers
as you may deem proper.
Very truly, your friend, .

The only Ebensburger injured was Col.

The Turf. On Friday last, a race for
100 a 6ide, half mile hsafs, best two in
three, came off between the celebrated
Ream running mare of Johnstown and a
running horse from the north of the
county, owned by Dick Evans. The
ground selected for the race Was a section
of the Loretto road, one and a half miles
east of Ebensburg. It wa moderately
well suited for the purpose in view, though
soft and muddy owing to late rains. A
large crowd of ppectators, estimated at
five hundred, were present, and betting
was lively.
First heal. The betting was 100 to
80 on the horse at the start. The mare
tock :he lead at the word go, and retained
it throughout. On the home-stretch, she
was ten lengths ahead, but the horse put
himself down to his work and cut down
the distance one-half, the mare passing
the pole and winning by about five lengths.
Second he it. Even betting. The
horse led off, and, as though the first heat
had only served the purpose of warming
up bis blood, continued to increase the
gjp between them until he reached home.
He came in six or eight lengths ahead,
looking fresh and vigorous, while the
mare gave unmistakable indications of
tevere punishment.
Third heat. This was a repetition of
the second, the iorse takiug the lead from
the jump and coming homo with ease
about twelve lengths ahead, and so win
ning the race.
Though the purse ran for was only
100, a much larger sum of .money chan
ged hands. Scarcely less than 1,000
was at stake on the result of the race.

see for yourself the surprising activity with
which it cleanses the blood and cures these
disorders.
During late years, the public have been
misled by large bottles, pretending to give a
quart of Extract of Sarsaparilla for one dol
lar. Most of these have been frauda unon
the sick, for they not only contain little, if
any,. Sarsaparilla, but often no curative in
gredient whatever. Hence, bitter disappoint
ment has followed the use of the various ex
tracts of Sarsaparilla which flood the market
until the name itself has become synonymous
with imposition and cheat. Still we call this
compound ''Sarsaparilla," and intend to sup
ply such a'remedy as shall rescue the name
from' the load of obloquy which rests upon it.
We think we have ground for believing it has
virtues which are irresistible by the class of
diseases it is intended to cure. We can as

terative we know how to produce, and we
have reason to believe it is by far the most
effectual purifier of the blood yet discovered.
Ayer's Cherry Pectoral is so universally
known to surpass every other medicine for
the cure of Cough3, Colds, Influenza. Hoarse
ness. Croup, Bronchitis, Incipient Consump
tion, and for the relief of Consumptive Pa
tients in advanced stages of the disease, that
it is useless here to recount the evidence of
its virtues. The world knows them.
