e:cral SlierJdan at the Battle of Winchester. From Perronal Recollections of Ma Gen. FheriJiin," by on officer of Iiis btafj, we quote the following 6tory ct the battle OI IQClltfcler . lino jui.tiuir, oucr- idsn appeared on tho field, having ridden up in hot haste from Winchester. A fearful responsibility Buddenly devolved upon him ; for, with him alone, rested the pafoty of thousands of precious live?, the fato of his army and the security of the Federal Capitol and ho was equal to the emergency. Making hia-way to Geo. Wright's headquarter'?, he eagerly in quired after the situation, and received the desponding answer: "General, I fear the battle is poins sgair.st us." "What!" cscliumeu Sheridan, his face livid with ind;iL.tton, "Early whip my three corps of it fan try and in' cavalry ? lie can't du it! . lefore nijiht wo bhall have our camp? lack ajra:n, and Karly will get the worst whipping he ever had." "Sheridan haa ccmo !" leaped from lip to lip along the Union lines, and, no longer retreating, the whole command seemed inspired with ccnfider.Cf, as though, by the advent of etc man, victory was already assured. l or two hours there was a lull in the conflict, while the stragglers from ihe dif ferent corps were returned to their oom ir.cnds. Then Sheridan proceeded to carry into execution the plans he had hastily formed. First, he cent General Cuitar with his division of Cavalry to tho extreme right, with instructions to corcen:rate his attack upon a limited por tion of the enemy's line :o vex, harraM, 2nd distress it, uutil he should succeed in cicating a panic, when, upon a given big cal, Sheridan with the rest of his army Tould cause this panic to comniuuicat itself along the entire length of the ene my's lines. This plan, simple in its conception, wa3 successful beyond the expectation of the commanding General himself. At 4 p. rn., Custar having turned the enemy's left flank, a charge w::s ordered along the whole line. It seemed hardly credible that the men who were o bndly worsted in the morn ing were the fame men who made that magnificent charge in the afternoon. The Sixth Corps sprung forward as if impelled from the cannon's mouth., while the other corps vied with it in impetuosity. The ccemy opened on the charging party with fifty pieces of artillery, filling the air with Hying missiles. With surprising precis ion shells were thrown into the solid masses of Union infantry, scattering limbs in every direction, and lilting mangled corpes high in the air. The Federal batteries, likewise, were not idle. Along the crests of the hills on either side cf the road, and down the pike close upon the heels of the infantry, they followed. Sheridan seeing one posted in an advan tageous position, turned to one of his Ftaft, and said, "Ride down to Capt. and tell him to fire jester, faster." The message delivered, the detonations were almcst without interval. . Only once did our infantry, falter when subjected to a scathing fite of mu-ketry from the enemy posted behind a 3tone wall. The survivers pushed on, and, with the bayonet, drove the opposing force from tha wall.. The enemy no longer made a etnnd. T!:cir men alike indifferent to the threats and entreaties of officers, f ought safety only in flight. A miserable rabble, they plunged into the stream, and crossing, hurried on through Strasburg toward the mountains, with Sheridan's i .1 j n i rooters close upon tiiezn. uver ioriy .1 1 1 - . t. - L uns, together nun a iare numocr ci , i .i - i j ioocs a oancoiic'i on me roau anu of the nrmv wacocs abandoned on the in the town, fell into the hand: cavalry. Deviu's Erigade, having the advai'C?, was occupied' until midoiuht in securing these trophies. An officer of tho btigade fearing a recapture, rode back to Sheridan's headquarters, when the following dialogue euut:d : "General. I have come back to ask for a brigade of infantry, to help hold the artillery already captured, oi which I think v.c have at least tweutv-five pieces." "I don't believe it;" said Sheridan, nut yet realizing the full extent of the victory. "Who are you ?" . "Captain li -, of the Dragoond. General, I believe we have over Jurty pieces." "Captain, you shall have iro brigades of infantry." When Cuotar came back, soon after, to report hi j wondeiful success, Sheridan caught him in his arms, embraced him, and then wrestled with him with all the playfylne&s of a child.
