A WEdTERX Politician. A corre spondent tells the following capital auee dots of Arkansas p litical life: About twenty yaara ago, Governor lr and Judge XV wore candidates for Con gress in this ditriet. They were both far-sighted, shrewd politicians the Judge the better Iuwjct and debater the Governor by fur the moro winning in his manners, aa the sequel will fully establish. One hot day in July, while they were traveling together on the canvass, they eaine upon a party of twenty men or more osecrubled on the roadside for the purpose ci having a shooting match. W ninkiog it a good time and place for presenting their respective claims, the Governor proposed btopping. They halted, and the Govern or soon made himself at Lome. lie bought a number of chances in the match, and being a'good marksman, succeeded in winning quite a quality cf beef, which constituted the prize. The Judge had conscientious ecmplcs as to shooting matches, and did not par ticipate, but Etood by, conversing with the more sober of the crowd, while his friend, the Gcveruor, was in high glee with his companions over the beef. When it was given out to successful shooters, our Gov ernor ordered his to be divided among some widows who he ascertained lived in the vicinity, and then asked the boys if they were not dry ? Of course they were, and the Governor generously ordered a plentiful supply of the "Oh be joyful' Here the Judge had scruples and did cot participate ; but had it been otherwise it would have availed nothing. The Gov ernor was decidedly the man at the shoot ing match, while the Judge felt himself entirely in the vocative. Leaving their friends, they proceeded on their way some twelve or fifteen miles, and halted at a camp-ground where the annual camp meeting was being held. They separated in tho crowd, each electioneering with all his might, with eld and young, friends and strangers making hay when the bud shone for there was a fine opening. Towards night the Judge began to look around for his distinguwhed opponent, but could not find him anywhere. He waited patiently till evening services began, and concluded he would go out where the peo ple had assembled for meeting, thinking! perhaps he might meet his friend. On going out, what was his astonishment to find the gallant Governor, the hero of the shooting match, in front of the altar, sur rounded by ministers and class-leaders, with a hymn book in his hand, head thrown back, singing as loud as his lungs would permit, How firm a foundation ye saints of the Lord." "From that moment," said the Judge, "1 gave up all hopes. I tell you I tell you, sir, a man that's good for a camp meeting and a shooting match, can't be beat for Congress. It can't be done sir." And so it proved. Not a. Christian. An accident hap pened on the Atlantic ana Great V cstem railroad, in Ohio, says tho Meadvil'e liejmLh'can. The baggage master sat in hi9 car reading at the time, but perceiv ing by the motion of tho car that an accident had taken place, he attempted to jump out, but was caught between two cars and badly jammed. He was taken cut in an insensible condition, and being laid upon the pround, an attempt was made to revive him, which proved suc cessful. As he opened his eyes, to a consciousness of things, a clergyman stepped out from the circle who surroun ded him, to offer a prayer for his complete restoration. lie .kneeled down by the side of the victim, but before proceeding wiin ins worK.or mercy, he apked the youth, "Are you a Christian V "No, fcir," as emphatically as his condition would allow, said the sufferer, "I am a baggage master on the Atlantic and Great Western railroad !" Tho prayer was omitted. Too Sharp. An amusing incident is told of a woman in England, whose hus band, a wealthy man, died suddenly, .without leaving any will, a he widow, desirous of securing the whole of the property, concealed her husband's death, and persuaded a poor shoemaker to take his place while a will could be made. Accordingly he was closely muffled in bed, as if very eick, and a lawyer was called in to write the will. The shoemaker, in a feeble voice, bequeathed half of all tho property to the widow. "What shall be done with the remainder ?" asked the lawyer. "The remainder," replied he, "I give aud bequeath to the poor Httlo shoe maker across the street, who has always been a good neighbor and a deserving man ;" thus securing a rich bequest for himself. The widow was thunder struck with the man'f audacious cunning, but did not dare expose the frand, and so two rogues shared the estate.
