i i i S3 Another Anfxdote of Gen. Scott. The New York correspondent of the 13ofeton Journal relates the following : "The term 'Fuss and Feathers applied to the old chief, grew out of nothing per sonal, fur he was a man whoso personal tastes were very simple. Bat he was very exact in his discipline, and he required every officer while on duty to be dressed according to his rank in the minutest thing. (Jen. Hamilton, who was on his staff, related to me, tho other day, a very characteristic anecdote. The General's headquarters in Mesico comprised two rooms, one opening into the other. In the rear room General Scott slept. One night, after the General had retired, one ol the staff wanted some water. It was in the front room. The evening was warra and the hour late, being cenr mid night. The officer started to go in his shirt sleeves. He was cautioned against the experiment r.s a dangerous one, 'for if the Grncrnl caught him in his quarters with his coat off, he would punish him. The ofSccr eaid he would rUk it ; that the General was asleep, and he would make no noise. He opened the dcor softly, and went on tip-toe to the water pitcher. lie had no time to drink before he heard the tinkle of tho bell, and the sentinel outside of the door entered. 'Take this man to the guard houe,' was the brief order, and the coatlesa ciSccr spent the night oa a Lard plank under t A Mutton vs. Eagle. "May it please the court," said a Yankee lawyer before a Dutch justice, "this is a case cf great importance; while the American eagle, whose sleepless eye watches over the welfare of this mighty Republic, and whose wings extend from the Alleghanics to the lofty and rocky chain of the West, was rejoicing in his pride cf place " "Shtop, dare ! I say, vat has dis here suit to do mit dem eagles ? Dis suit has nothin to do wit the wild birds. It ia on sheep !" exclaimed the worthy justice. "True, your honor; but my client has rights' "Yer glient has no right mit dem eagles." "Of course not ; but the laws of lan guage " "Vat care I for the laws of language, eh ? I understand de law3 of d6 State, and dat ish enough for me. Confine your talk to de case." "Well, then, my client, the defendant, is charged with stealing a sheep, and " "Dat vill do ! dat vill do ! Your glient charged mit stealing a sheep dat is jes nine shillin'. The gourt vill adjourn." Tile Ccp and the Lip. The old say ing, "there is many a slip between the cup and the lip' was supposed to take its origin.Jfrom one of Penelope's wooers being shot as he was going to drink. But it arose, as Ainsworth has it, thus : "A King ot Thrace had planted a vineyard, when one of his slaves whom he had much oppressed in that very work pro phesied that he (the king) should never taste the wine produced by it. The king disregarded his prophesy ; and when, at an entertainment, he held the cup full of his own wine, he sent for the slave, and asked him insultingly what he thought of his prophesy now ? The slave only an swered 'There's many a slip between the i up and the lip.' Scarcely nad he spoken tthen news was brought that a huge boar was laying his vineyard in waste. The king arose in a f ury, attacked the boar aDd was killed without ever tasting tho wine." Dahinq Adventure. A New York paper says : Mons. Auguste Duislay, a trymnast, went up in a balloon from Elm l'ark, on "Wednesday afternoon, and per formed some very difficult leats upon a trapeze pendant therefrom. When six or seven thousand feet in the air, te was overtaken by a rain 6torm, and tho bal loon became wet and heavy and began to descend. When over the Hudson river, tmd eixty feet in tho air, the balloonist sprang from his air ship into tho river, fearing to get entangled if both came down toeether. He swam for tho .New York shore, and was finally picked up, when nearly exhausted, by a small boat which had put cut for his relief, t 1 . . , 3 013 WOKK OF ALL KINDS NEATLY AND EXPEDITIOUSLY EXECUTED at inn 'ALLEG II AN IAN" OFFICE, HIGH St., EBENSBURG, PA IUBLICATION OFTICL r.03EllT DAVIS' BUILDING UP STAIRS.
