A few weeks since, n tall, awkward-looking chap, just from the mountains of Vermont, came on board one ci the North River boats at Albany. Ills curiosity was amazingly excited at once, and he commenced "pecking, as he cal led it, into etcry titt'ok and corner of the boat. The captain a office, the engine room, the water-closet, the barber shop, all underwent an inspection; and then he went on deck, and stood in amazement at the Jever-bcam, the chimneys, and various 'fixins," till at last he caught siirht of the bell. This was the crowniug wouder, and he viewed it from every position, walked around if. sot down on his knce9 and Jookfd up into it, and exclaimed : Wall, raly : this beat? the bell on our mcetiu house a daiucd sight.'' Jy tin time the attention oi the cap taiu ana several ci the passengers were attracted to this geniu?. "How much would you ask to let a fel ler ring tins bell r ' "You teat ring it for a dollar, sir," said the captain. "Wall, its a bargain, all fair and agreed, and no backing out." "It's a bargain, sir," said the captain. Our hero went deliberately end brought a seat, tnid took hold of the bell-rope, and having arranged everything to his satis faction, commenced ringing slowly at first, and, gradually faster and faster, till every body on board thought the boat on fire, and rushed on ucck screaming with alarm. There stood the captain, and there stood the "monster," ringing away, first glow and tlren fast, and then two or three taps at a t:me. The passengers began to expostulate ; the captain said it was a bargain. Rut the passengers becamo urcent that the eternal clangor should be stopped. All the while there eat our hero, un disturbed, ringing away more ways than a Cockney chime-rmger ever dreamt of. At last the captain began to think it time to stop the simpleton, but his answer was : And he rang away for dear life. "Well, stvs the Captain, "what will you take to stop r ANIC ARRANGEMENTS! 3UGAR KETTLE3, 10 to 40 gallons. COrPER KETTLES, 3 quarts to 40 gallons. TINWARE, all sorts a lid kinds. "Well, walk down to the office and get your money and passage ticket, saiu the captain. Neck-Twisting in Cnuncn. A good story is told of an eccentric old parson, who was sorely annoyed by a habi; his people had acquired (and which prevails, by-thc-way, in all other churches, even now and hereabouts to some extent) of twisting their necks around every time anybody entered the door, and passed up the aisle of the meeting house, to see what manner of person it might be. Wearied with the annoyance, the old man exclaimed, one Sunday "Brethren, if you will only cease turn ing your heads round, whenever the door opens, and will keep your attention on me, 1 will promise to tell you a 1 preach, who it is tliat comes in. Accordingly he went on with the scr mon, and presently made a stop as one of he deacons entered, paying "That is Deacon , who keeps the 1 VVM J I And then he announced, in turu, the advent of eac'j individual, proceeding the while with his sermon as composedly as the circumstances would permit, when at last a stranger came in, when he cried out "A little old man in green spectacles, and a drab overcoat don't know him you can all turn round and look for your selves this time." It is hardly necessary to add that the cood man carried his point, and there was but little neck-twisting seen in his con gregation after that day. . In Love.
