I t i c "'.1 1! U .:U The King's Mistake. A number of old politiciaus, all of whom were seeking othcc under the Government, were seated at a tavern porch talking, when a toper, named John Ifr r , a person who is very loquacious when 'corned," but exactly the opposite when sober, said, u the company had no objection, ha would tell them story. They told him to "fire away, wbereunon he spoke hs follows: A certain kinjr I don't remember his name had a philosopher upon whose judgment he always depended. Now, it happened that one day the king took it into his head to go a hunting; aud after summoning his nobles and making the necessary preparations, ho summoned the philosopher and asked him if it would rain. The philosopher told-him it would ' not, and he and his noble departed. While journeying along they met countryman, on a jackass. He advised them to return, "for," said he "it will certainly rain." Tl.ey smiled contempt uously upon him, and passed on.. Before they had gone many miles, however, they had reason to regret not having taken the rustic's advice, aa. a heavy shower cominsr upi they were drenched to tho skin. ' When they had returned to the palace, the king reprimanded the philosopher severely ' Tbe king then gave him his "walking papers,", and sent lor the countryman, who made his appearance. . "JLell me, said the king, "bow you knew it wouid rain. "I don't know," said the rustic, "nay jackass told me." " A.nd how, pray, did he tell you ?'' asked the king. . . fITT tt: nl" in r ti v-i - i j t-iii TV, nifteftf ' returned the' rustic. The king sent . the countryman away, and, procuring the jackass of him, put him (the jackis) in the place the philos opher had tilled "And here," observed John; loo inir very wise, "is whpre the king made a great mistake." "How so?" inquired lii3 auditors ea gerly. "V hy, ever tinco that time, evevy jack ass wants an office.' Canine Sagacity. During the sum mer of 18 , a gentleman, by the name of "Old Moss," who was considerable of a wag, was traveling on a steamboat up the Mississippi river. He had with him an ugly cur, that he called Major. "Old Moss ' was seated with a number of men in the cabin, and was boasting what his dog could do. The captain, who was standing near, remarked that what he said might be true, but he did not believe it. .Moss replied, that he would b.et the treat for all the gentlemen present, that he would -make his dog do three things by telling him to do them. The captain took the bet. Moss then opened the door and went out on the guards, followed by tho captain and gentlemen present, who were anxious to see the sport, Moss seized him by the cape of the neck, and tossed him overboard. As soon as he touched the water, Mo?3 yelled out : "Swim, Major, swim !' The dog swam, of course. Moss kept his eyes on the dog. As soon as he per ceived that the dog could touch the ground, he roared out : "Wade, Major, wade I" Major wadt:d until he landed on dry ground, when Mos.' shouted out: "Shake yourself!" . Major shook hini'elf. Moss turned to the captain, who with the gentlemen pres ent, .were convulsed with laughter, and exclaimed : "There 1 by the eternal living boots, I have won the bet." It is useless, perhaps, to say that the captain paid tha treat. JR2F A certain green customer, who was a - stranger to mirrors, stepped Ljito the cabin of. one of our ocean steamers, and, Btoppihg in front of a large pier glass, which he took for a door, said "I Cl XT mister, when docs thi3 here boat "J etart ?" Getting no reply from the dumb reflec tion before him, be again repeated "I say, mister, when doec this here boat start?" ... ... " Incensed at the still silent figure, he broke out : "Go to thunder, you darned sassafras colored, shock-headed bull-ealf ! You don't look as though you knew much, anyhow." .
