r 5 I1 jl I 111 i ii r rl I :2 hi In the Pennsylvania Legislature, tvo years ago, there was a member named Charles Wilson, from one of the northern counties, who considered -himself "among the great oratois of the day, and, when pretty well filled with "Harrisburg water,", would get off for tho' edification of his colleagues some very rich illustrations. Beins somewhat interested in a hill before the House, he made what he considered one of his master speeches, during the delivery of which he used the illustration oi "Nero fiddling while Home was burn ib." lie had scarcely taken his eat vrhen a member tapped him on the shoul der acd said, "Say, Ohar. He, it wasn't Nero that 'fiddled,' it was Car. You should correct that before it goes on the record." Iu an instant he was on his feet, and ex claimed, "Mr. Speaker Mr. Speaker I liiade a mistake. It wasn't Nero that 'fiddled' while loa.e was burniusr; it was Julius Csisar." lIarPllJ "cr him, . the breaker was so busily engaged that ho did not hear him ;-but some members near by heard and enjoyed the joke. Afterwards pome one told "him - that he was right in the first-place, which resulted in his read ing all the ancient history io the State Library during the remainder of the winter, to assure himself who'it was that "fiddled." " After the advent of Gen. Logan's corps at Huntesville, the rooms in the principal hotel at that place came into demand. A beautiful and accomplished actress had been staying at the hotel, and ia about a minute, cr a minute and a half ur two minuies after she had vacated her room, the gallant Gen. 0. was assigned to it by the landlord. The General, on ex amining his bed previous to retiring, found a stowy robe de nuit neatly folded under the pillow, marked in delicate characters with the name of the fair owner. The chambermaid was summoned, and asked by the.General, he holding the garment in his hand "Do you know Miss Lottie Hough ?" :Yes," answered the chambermaid. "Then carry this to her, with my com pliments, and say to her that General O. is not in the habit of sleeping with empty nightgowns !" Sgy Lorenzo Dow, the itinerant preach er, so famous in his lifetime for his eccen tricity, commenced his sermon upon one occasion by reading from St. Paul, "I can do all things." The preacher paused, took off his spectacles, laid them on the open Bible, and said, "No, Paul, you're mista ken for once; I'll bet you five dollars you can't, and stake the money." At the same time putting his hand in his pocket, he took out a five dollar bill, laid it upon the Bible, took up his spectacles again and read, "through- Jesus Christ our Lord." "Ah, Paul," exclaimed the preacher, snatching up the five dollar bill aud returning it to his pocket, "that's a different matter j the bet's withdrawn." . The word "News" is not, as many imagine, derived from the adjective new. In former times, between the years 1525 and 1737, it was a prevalent practice to put over the periodical publications of the djy the initial letters of the cardinal points of the compass, thus : N V E 8 ' Importing that these periodicals contained iutelligence irom the four quarters of the lobe; .and from this practice is derived l he term New.spapcr. ,C?A young man and woman onco upon a time stopped at a country tavern. 'I heir awkward appearance excited the auction of one of the landlord's family, vbo struck up a conversation with them by inquiring how far they had traveled that- day. "Traveled!" exclaimed the fairer ol the strangers, somewhat indig nantly, "wc didn't travel we rid!" " E2! At a christening, while the minis ter was making out the certificate, he for got the day of the month, aud happened to say : "Let me sec, this is the thirtieth." "The thirtieth !" exclaimed the indig nant mother, "no such thing; it's only the eleventh I'' JCgy Booth, the tragedian, had a broken nose. . A lady once remarked to him, "I like your acting, Mr. Booth; but, to be frank with you7 I can't get over your nose."
