On the morning of the 10th ult., the wife of Mr. Thomas Wakefield, of West Wheatfield township, Indiana county, committed sui cide. She first drank a bottle of lauda num, but fearing this would not kill speedily enough, she immediately after ward cut two horrible gashos in her throat with a razor. "With persistency unparal leled, she then precipitated herself into a well, where her lifeless body was discov ered floating on the water. Domestic trouble was the cause of this horrible act. Our readers ought to subscribe for both of them, LOCAL CORRESPONDENCE. TWO OALLANT SOLDIERS DEAD VARIOUS MIL ITARY MATTERS $400 LOCAJU BOUXIT TUB ricsic Johnstown, August 28, 1861. Correspondence of The Alleghanian. On Thursday last, the remains of Lieut. Harry Crouse, of Co. I, 55th P. V., were brought to his father's residence, in this place. Ue had been killed the preceding Saturday, while on the skirmish line with Grant's army. The bullet is supposed to have come from a rebel sharpshooter, and pierced the braiD, entering above the right eye. Lieut. Crouse had been in service nearly three year?, and had re-enlisted. His remains were conveyed to their final resting place on Saturday, the funeral cor tege numbering , over one thousand per sons, who thus testified their respect for the deceased, and sympathy for the family. This morning the body of Lieut. J. Speer Orr, 21st Pa. Cav., but for the 'last few months serving with the Potomac Ar my as infantry, wa3 brought home, he having been mortally wounded in one of the late battles. .He was shot through the thorax, and lived but a short time. Deceased served with the 3rd Pa. in the three months service, and with the. 133d Pa. in the nine months service. He was universally esteemed by a large circle of acquaintances, and hundreds are to-day paying, the last tribute due the brave dead. His semains will be interred to motrow. A Heavy Artillery company is being recruited here, under the auspices of "W. B. Lowmau and John B. Hay. Both ; these officers have seen service, and will no doubt acquit . themselves creditably should they be called upon to "fuel the music." They expect to leave with. 150 men in about a week hence. Capt. Stack- ! house leaves the present week with a full company. It is expected that over 300 men will leave this city for the "one year service." No need of drafting if every district would do as Johnstown is doing. Last night Councils decided to appro priate 6200 to volunteers crediting them selves to this place. . This, with the 3200 subscribed by our citizens, will makevthe handsome sum' of $100 bounty to volun teers crediting themselves to this district. The picnic for the new Catholic church has been postponed until next Saturday week, when it will come off without fail. Our Schools. An examination of teachers for the schools of this borough was held here on Saturday last by Co. Supt. Condon. Only four persons made application, one of whom was male and the other three females. Susequent to tho examination, the Directors decided to not open the schools until the first of next month, and no awards were made. On, Pshaw! The Johnstown Demo crat last week mado the heart-rending announcement to its "many readers" that Gen. Hunter had passed through Johns town on his way to Chicago, to "intimi date" the Democratic Convention. Gen. Hunter did go to Chicago, stayed ono day, and then left before tho Convection met.
