A railroad accident occurred at South Fork, a few miles east of this place, one day last week, resulting in the instant death of a fireman named Colie, and the destruction of at least one locomotive and a large number of freight cars- It appears that two freight trains were running in the same direction, and in close proximity to each other. The first of these was some what behind time, and when slowly roun ding the curve at South Fork, was run into by the rear train, which was coming at a high rate of speed. The engine cf the second train and several cars were thu3 thrown off the track and down an embankment. The engineer jumped for his life, and. escaped unhurt, but the fire man remained at hi? post, and went down with the engine. lie was inextricably buried underneath the wreck, to which fire was in afew moments communicated from the locomotive. Horrible as the tale msj read, the unfortunate man was literally turned to a cinder reduced to ashes with the debris of the luckless train That portion of hi3 remains which was recognizable was gathered up and ta ken to Altoona. where his mother and a couple of brothers reside, and interred. There was quite a lively time here on Saturday evening, growing out cf a "free fight" between some of the veterans of the 5ith P. V. and a number of persons from the rural districts. In the melee, several cf the latter were badly used up. I did net ascertain the cause cf the quarrel. Subsequently, some cf the Eo'diers broke in the door of 31 r. Luekkardrs store, but befcre any other damage could be dene, Col. Linton (cf the 54th) appeared upon the scene and dispersed the rioters. A general closing-np for the time being of places cf business on Main street wns the result of these oLstrepvercns demonstra tions. A picnic gotten Up for the epeeia! benef t of the returned soldiers cf the 54th was held at 2inevah a few days since. Everything is said to have passed ofi greatly to the enjoyment of all concerned. Four regiments cf 109-days men passed west on Friday. Their destination is Chi cago, Bock Island, and Indianapolis. Three cf them were Pennsylvania regi ments and one Massachusetts, and each numbered about 1.200 men. The feeder and canal at this point, bet ter known in conjunction probably a? 'uLc ditch," are now being filed up. One good result cf this process will consist in the fact that a straight Etreet will thereby be established from near the corner cf Frank lin and Canal streets eastward to the bridre across the Conemauh. In the absence of something mere important to engross their attention, if such a thing were possible, how would it look In our County Commissioners to do what they have frequently been strenuously urged to do by their constituents, to wit, offer a local bounty of say one hundred dollar per man for volunteers to fill the quota of Cambria county under the imp-ending draft?
