In thi3 region, then, the thickness cf the sheet enroot have been nauoh less than six thousand feet, and this is in keeping with the same kind of evidence in other rarta of the country; for, wherever the mountains are much below six thousand feet, th ice seems to have passed directly over them, while the few peaks rising to that height, are left untouched The gla cier, ho argues, vras God's great plow, and ?hen the ice vanished from tho face of the land, it left it prepared for the hand of the husbandman. The hard surface of the rocks w&3 ground to powder, the ele ments of the soil vrere mingled in fair proportions, granite wa3 carried into the lime regions, lime was mingled with the more arid and unproductive granite dis tricts, and a soil was prepared fit for the agricultural uses of man. There are evi dences all over the polar regions to show that at one period the heat of the tropics extended all over the globe. Zj-A curious rebel visitor came stealth ily into our lines at Petersburg one night during last week. lie was invited to remain and partake of a bounteous repast coffee, pork, and "hard-tack." Consent soon followed the request. "While refresh ing his inner man, our guards were re gated with many a story, diverted with man v quiet drolleries and quaint sayings. There is something strange in these meet ingswhere those who but the day before cursed each other in the heat of battle, and before early dawn, at the sound of the bugle horn, may slay each other when fall of the bread eaten sociably together. This man came by night, not to gain information, but to eat his supper. During the day our pickets had been twitting them with what they had for supper. Soft bread, sour kraut, and potatoes had just been issued. The rebels would not believe this to be a "true bill." Hence this man's visit. Xo one in imperfect health could relish food with so much gusto. lie had brought with him that excellent sauce of late year grown unfashionable-hunger. After staying his inordinate appetite with a marching ration, Lo took his departure.
