Toaer, of Washington city, for the present of a copy of his lately issued book bearing the above title. The work is handsomely gotten up, in blue and gold, and bears internal evidence of penetration and deep thought on tha part of the author. See ing that the Doctor was at one time a resident of this county, we think "3Iater nal Instinct" should be allowed the com pliment of an extended circulation among eur people. - Arm Broken. On Thursday last, Mr. Jacob Scttlemoyer, whose nuptials we chronicled in these columns a couple of weeks since, met with a severe accident, in this wise : He was coming to town, on the Eb. and Susq. Think Itoad, with a load of shook, when, some three, or four wiles out, his sled upset, throwing him to the ground and precipitating the shook upon him. His arm was fractured in three different places, and he otherwise evere!y injured. We understand the sufferer is doing as, well as could be expected under the circumstances. Educational Column. We hope our readers, and especially those engaged in the profession ot teach ing, will give ear to the hints and sugges tions which may from time to time appear therein. Terse and vigorous communica lions on school subjects are solicited. Railroad Accident.- The first acci dent of magnitude characterizing the Ebensburg and Cresson Railroad since I its construction ccurred on Saturday ' evening last. When rounding a curve Dear "Bradley's cut," the locomotive and freight car ran off the track and over a precipice twenty feet down, smashing the former considerably, and piling the latter in fragments on top. The passenger car fortunately remained on the track, and lone of the passengers were injured. The engineer went over with the locomo tive, but was not hurt; the fireman jumped off and had his hind severely bruised. A gaojr of workmen were immediately put "n the ruins, and in a short time had the road in running order again. .Tiie Weather. We were visited with tremendous gust of wind on Tuesday B'ght of last week, which had the effect f piling the snow, with which the ground M covered to the depth of several inches, 10 great drifts here, there, and elsewhere. THURSDAY::::::::::: LOCAL CORRESP ONDENCE. WATER WORKS TOWN HALL THE SCHOOLS : LIBERALITY OP WOOD, MORREIiIi A CO. A SLEIGHING PARTY, AND HOW THE MEN MOXOP OLIZBD TIIE DANCING AN'D TEE WOMEN THE EATING SOLDIERS, THE DRAFf, AC, AC Johnstown, Jan. 24, 1864. Correspondence of The Alleghanian. For some time past, several citizens of this place hare been agitating the ques tion touching the propriety of erecting water-works, for the purpose of supplying our growing city witli an inexhaustible supply of the fluidical commodity. A public meeting, to devise ways and means for putting the project into execution, was held in Council Chamber last night, when and where it was determined to apply immediately for a charter, and committees were appointed in the differ ent rards to solicit stock subscriptions. From the well known enterprise charac terizing thgentlemen having the matter principally in charge, I have, no doubt the project will be entirely successful. Our Councils have taken in hand the matter of the building of a. Town Hall. A committee of one from each ward has been appointed, to consider plan, location, &c, with instructions to report at special meeting to-morrow night. We are badly fn need of a public hall of this kind, and it is due the prosperity ot town that one be erected. The present term of our public schools closes on Saturday next, with an exami nation of pupils. In connection with this subject, I cannot refrain from paying a compliment to Wood, JNIorrell & Co., for their large-hearted liberality evinced in employing a teacher and paying all the expenses incident t) a free night school for the boys employed in the mines and about the mill, who are, of course, depri ved of many of the advantages afforded by our beneficent school system. The idea of a night school for these boys originated with Mr. Morley, Supt. of the Company's mines, and was promptly taken in hand by Mr. Morrtll. Mr. Freeman, iu charge of one of our day schools, has been ap pointed teacher, and the attendance al ready reaches eveuty-five. Mr. Morrell, I understand, designs starting a similar school in Millville, for the benefit of the boys residing in that vicinity. A short time ago, a party of Germans, with their wives, concluded to take a little recreation after the manner of a sleigh ride. Accordingly, all arrangements be ing perfected, they proceeded hence to a neighboring village, where the ladies betook themselves to one of the two public houses of the place. Meantime, their lords and masters obtained posses sion of the other house, situate at the further end ot the village, where, procu ring a musician, they' soon gathered a number of the country girls, and amused themselves "tripping it on the light fan tastic." The- "better halves" became informed of the occupation of their liege IorJs, and, as supper for the entire party had been prepared at their house, they concluded, as a retaliatory procedure, to eat not only their own but also .their huabaud's portion of the same ! Which they did, and the gay and festive Bene dicts perforce were obliged to return home supperless, doubtless convinced of the utter impracticability of getting ahead of women. Twenty-three of the members of Capt. Ityckman's six months cavalry company are home on furlough, they having re enlisted for the war. An effort will be made, by the inducement of liberal home bounties, to raise the entire quota of these districts by volunteering. May Leon. Wanted! Competent Business Men The demand for skillful and accom plished accountants is perpetual, and con.nantly increasing with the increase of production and trade. Young men wish ing to prepare themselves for commercial pursuits will find no institution in this country possessing advantages equal to those afforded by the Iron City College, of Pitthburg, Pa., which is now patronized by every State in the Union. M. Jackson, of this City, because I was prejudiced against them "for many years under the impression that they were chiefly an acloholic mixture. I am indebted to my friend Robert Shoemaker., for" the removal of this prejudice by proper tests, and for en couragement to try them, when suffering from great.and long'continued debility. The use of three bottles of these Bitters, at the beginning of the present year, was followed by evident relief, and restoration to a decree of bodily aud mental vigor wWch I hadnot felt for six mouths before, and had almost despaired of regaining. I therefore thank God and my friend for directing me to use them. J. NEWTON BROWN. Philad'a., Jcsk 23, 1861, ATTENTION SOLDIERS!
