I Knew Suh-Would. In school, especial ly, John was a source of constant annoy ance to the teacher. One day the mistress punished him lor some misdemeanorand John , went home, crying, to enter his complaint, and told his father that'the mistress had whipped him. "What," exclaimed the deacon, elevating his eyebrows, "been whipped?" "Y-a-a-p," sobbed the boy. "And did joa let a woman whip ye V asked the old deacon. : "Ya-a-s, I couldn't help it." "Well, John, you to school to-mor row, you little rascal, and it jIiss undertakes to whip 3re again, j'ou just p"tch in ; don't let a woman whip "you if you can help it. Don t take any stick to strike with, but you may strike, bite, kick and scratch just as much as ye're a mind ' .The next day the boy went to school, and, emboldened by the permission eriven by his father, was soon brought before the tribunal of violated rules. The teacher undertook to correct him. The result was that John frot a most unmersiful trouncing and was most thoroughly subdued. Well, he went home to his lather, crying, "Well, dad, I got an awful bad licking to-day." "What!" said the old deacon, "have you let that woman whip you again "Y-a-a-s," whimpered John. "I kicked her, struck her, and fit her all I could, but hc lammed me orfully ! "Aha!" chuckled the humorous old deacon, "you tarnal little foolIknew she wou!u, and she il give you a trouncing ev cry time she undertakes it, and I advise you to behave yourself in future. - John began to have some perception of ins lathers motive, and alter that was a wiser and better boy. , The Providence Journal tells tho following story : As the mid-day Woos ter train was about leaving the depot, a roan of the Johnsonian type of manners entered one of the cars, and gruffly requested that two young ladies occupying separate seats should sit together, that he and his friend might enjoy a Icte a-tcte on the other scat.
