In 1833 he received his appointmeut as Cadet in tho Wot Point Military Academy lrom that State. He graduated on the COth Juue, landing No. 28 in a class of 50 members. Amon2j his classmates Cicis. Arnold, Benham, Dates, French, Sedgwick, Will iams and Todd of the Union army, and Bragg, Mackall and others of the llcbel army. lie received his appointment as Second Lieutenant July 1, 13o7, and Nov. 1, 1838, wdSpronioteel to a first hicuteu uocyjji the 1st U- S. Artillery. From July to'October, 1841, he acted Adjutant of the Military Academy; and from September, 1811. to May, 1845, was ranked as lleginimtal Adjutant. lie served with distinction in Mexico and was Aid-de-Camp to (Jen. Hauler, ""i the 23d Sept., 1816, he was brevefW Capt ain for gallant conduct in several conflicts in Montery, Mexico, while acting ia that capacity. In March, 1847, he was ap pointed Assistant Adjutant-General, with the rank of Captain. . He was brevetted Major for gallant and meritorious conduct in the affair at the National Bridge, Mexico, June 11, 1847, and on the 13th September, 1.847, Major . Hooker received the brevet or Lieutenan Colonel, for gallant aud meritorious con duet in the battle of Chepultepcc. On the 29th of October, 1848, he was ap pointed a Captain of tho 1st Artillery and on the same Jhy ho resigned his regimental commission, retaining his po eition in the Adjutant General's Depart mcnt, with brevet Lieutant Colonel. In February, 1853, he left the army am retired to nrivate life. lie lived iu Cali fornia till called upon again to do battle in his countr3r,! cause. On the 17tH of March, 18G1, ho was commissioned Brig adier General of A ulunteers. his appoint ment being accredited to the State of Cal ifornia. He at first served under (ren Dix in Maryland, but was soon appointed to a separate command in the Army of the i'otomac under Gen. 31 Llelliu. Jlis nelu of operations was in the disturbed counties o; xUarvuud, and thtse hz reorganized, and disarmed the Secessionists without loss of life. Ilia division at this time took possession of the northern and eastern shores, or left hank of the Potomac, and several spirited excursions were made by portions of his command in the neighborhood of Budd's Ferry, Fort Tobacco, &c, and to the op posite shore. A portion of these troops afterward crossed the Potomac, and took possession of the batteries which had blockaded the river for some time previous, and having effectually removed these obstructions ar.d advanced a short distance into the interior, were finally withdrawn aud transferred to the immediate command of Gen. M'Clellau on the Peninsula. In the contest at Williamsburg his di vision bravely stood the brunt of the bat tle, and it Fair Oaks the men again showed their va'or, and the General his fighting qualities. In the various minor contests, Hooker took hi part, and went bravely through with .his share of the seven days' fight. When M'Clellan's army was placed undei the command of General Pope, we find the names of fighting Joe Hooker' and tho late Gen. Kearney men tioned together In the thickest of . the struggle; aud on the bloody fi:ld of Antie- tam, Hooker s corps opened the ught, and he and his men wore- foremost iu the terrible-conflict. The gallant general was wounded iu the loot before the close of. the battle, and he was compelled to quit the field. On the 12th of November, Gen. Hooker was ap pointed by the President to the command of the Fifth Army Corps in place of Gen. Porter, and on the 15th lie was appointed by Gen. Burnsidc to the command of the Center Grand Division of the Army of th Potomac. This Grand Division opened the battle at F.-cdericksburg, and fought gullautly under the direction of its brave command er. Gen. Hooker's commission as Major General of Volunteers dates from July- 4, 18G2.
