Just at daybreak the enemy ;rot pos session oi' the Harriet Luue, tyre down the United States flag, r.nd raised a small ronfoderafe flag au 1 a flag of truce. T lie Owasco, finding the Harriet Lane was in the hands of the rebels, sent a shot clean through her machinery, ju.-t above the water line, having first steamed down out of musket range, ihe shot . probauiy disabled her, as the rebel vessels subsequent ly towed her olf to the wharf. The rebels replied to the Uwasco with the guns of the Harriet Lane. About an hour after daybreak, General Magrudcr sent a flag, of true, in charge of two rebel officers, on board the Owasco. He demauded the surrender of all the vessels 111 the harbor, and gave three hours lor deliberation. The captain of the (Jwaseo scut the flag; of truee to Comodorc Rensliaw, saying he had no power in ihe matter. The rebel Governor of Texas (Lubbuck) accompanied the flag; of truce, and became ho much interested in the Owasco, and so much amused by his own conversation, that he remained 0:1 the Owasco while the officers went to the We.-:tGeld with the flay of truce. "She is a One vessel," said the Governor, looking about admiringly. ''She will be a fine addition to the l.'uniederate navy. The captain of the Owasco, not eeing the subject exactly in that light, put on ttcam, and started toward the bar, passing the rebel batteries with the Governor on deck, earnestly conversing ou the prowess of the Coulederate soldiers, and the advan tages of capturing the vessels then in the' harbor, bestowing especial praise'upon the Owasco. He wanted to know how much the vessel cost. He walked from gun to gun, asked the calibre, and many other fpuestons, until he suddenly awoke to the fact that the ship was gradually slipping out of the rebel power. "I wish to eo.ushorc now, captainlf you please," said the Governor. "The weather," replied the captain, "is-excecdiugly line to day. Governor, do you always get so pleasant a New Year's day as this in Galvcstou ? It is really charming." "This is not right," sail the Governor; "I wish now to go ashore. llJy the way, Governor," replied the captain, the Owasco meantime pushing oi' with good speed 'by the way, Governor, you are the successor of old Sam Houston in the gubernatorial chair. Houston was t juite topular North at one time ; but he iccms to have gone over to the rebels. Do you know wheru he is now V "Sir," Raid the Governor, "this is all wrong. 1 came here under a flag of truee and I now demand that you stop this ves sel and put me ashore." "Houston was a singular man," replied the captain, "a very singular man indeed," speaking in apparent unconsciousness of t tic Governor's deaiest thoughts. "lie won a great reputation as the champion of Texan independence, and was regarded as cine cf the firmest Union men in the whole Souf h . The Governor discovered, vvh.cn too late, that, having allowed the flag of ti n -e to depart without accompanying it, he could no longer claim its prelection, and he now begun to fear not cn!y that the Owasco would slip o!l", which hc was all the time doing, Irat that lie would bo carried off as a prisoner. However, the captain kept him on "board only until he had passed all the rebel batteries in safe ty when he obligingly set him ashore There is little doubt that the shot lired through the Harriet Lane saved her from getting out to sea, and that, if not retaken by us, she will at least be destroyed. Ba-r, in Lancaster City, on July 20th, 1838, has been subjected to a. very severe test, which it withstood in a most satisfactory manner. This Safe, eoutainiutr all my bouks together with va'uible papers belonging to myself and seme to my neighbors and friends, iiiid represeting a value of over Twenty Thous and Dollars, (S20,0'J0) was in my Mill which was destroyed on the night of the 27th of Ju ly, 18G0, and passl through the fiery ordeal unscathed. The Safe wasonthe second lioor and fell to tl;e basement of the MilL, and was subjected for six hours to an intense heat among the rni.is, which was greatly increased by the combustion of a large qu-tatity of grain confined within the brick walls. After the lire the -se.fo was opened and the books and papers taken out in a state of perfect preser vation, the paper not even being discolored. This fact was, however, to many bystanders a better recommendation of your Sa'Y's than could be expressed in any other Tvords from me.
