The Advance in Coal Oil. The sudden rise in coal oil has been so unex pected, and seemingly so unreasonable, the supply of petroleum being inexhausti ble, and the cost of production trifling, that an inquiry into the cause possesses some interest at the present time. The Philadelphia Ledger submits the following as a partial explanation of the sudden rise in price i "The caue is scarcity, but a scarcity arising from a suspension of the business of refining. In June, the most ef the refiners stopped work, under the. fear that the Government tax would ruin the business. After three mouths of sus pension, work was resumed by some of the rc5ners, but bad roads to the oil wells have made the getting out of crude oil a slow process. .Meanwhile, the stock in market lias been greatly reduced by con sumption and foreign shipments. .Many of the most extensive refiners have orders on hand for all tbcv can make in a month, and the prospect is that high prices will rule for a few weeks to come. The for eign demaud is very large, as in Europe the oil is used directly for manufacturing gas. home or the richest and mos eipen sive colors u?ed for dyeing are also obtain ei from the petroleum." With a supply exhaustless, and the re fineries once more in full operation, it wil be next to impossible for either manufac turers or speculators to maintain the pre? cut advanced rates for any long period Those who have taken to "penny dips" in lieu of the petroleum will be glad to hear it.
