'Breathes there a man with soul so dead Who never to himself bath said Thi3 is my own, my native land I' " Kind friends : to-morrow the "Glorious Fourth" the natal' day of American In dependence. In as much as it is met, Tight and the bounden duty of every good American citizen to occasionally afford ventilation to Iiis appreciation of tho benign form of Vjovernment under which he lives, Or, in other vrords, to "show hid col ors," And, as this can in do wise be better or more properly done than by rendering due and sufficient observance to our Na tional Birthday, Therefore, here's hoping you and ev cvery one of you may have a "good old time" of it, all to yourselves, in accepting and carrying out the principles herein in volved. Fourth of July corae3 but once a year, and lasts, moreover, only a day. Which are our sentiments. In the midst of ycur festivity and gen eral O-be-joyfulness, however, good read er, do not fail to evince, in a suitable manner, your gratitude to the Great Sov ereign of the Universe for the many "good and perfect gifts" He hath vouchsafed unto us : For giving us unity of purpose as a Nation as regard the grapplingof the great and vital issues of the day ; For introducing distractions and di.sen fcions into the camps of Traitors ; For allowing our National Ensign that 'Flag of the free heart's hope and home, By angel hands to valor givj2t " to Coat triumphantly at the head of ad vancing and conouerifi": armies : For demonstrating that the "Stars and liars" fast colors, seeing they are always cu the run are a vile abortion, a coun terfeit and a cheat : that the Stars are by no means fixed, and the Bars only the creature of a distempered and guilty imag ination : the whole being strictly uu-eon-stituted for "tying on to" any grcaf lengtii of time; For affording us bright hepes for the present, and fond anticipations for the future ; For withholding pfstiUnce and suJ'ien death from cur domains Tugether with many other excellencies that we uaunot think of just at present, or, thinking, haven't room to print. Selah! But, by every certainty and without fail, friends, venerate "the Day we Cele brate." Fi.joy yourselves as you see t only, ee lit to enjoy yourselves. Go in lemons for tie Union, Constitu tion and I3'-Law3. With or without water. Otherwius, do pretty much-as you please, and please U3 accordingly. 'Forever float that standard sheet, Where breathe the foe, but fall before us; With Freedom's soil beneath our feet, And Freedom's banner streaming o'er us." Courteous reader ! we salute you ! ' To the point : the Johnstown Tri bune a expose of the falsity of the story going the rounds to the effect that Messrs. Wood, iMorrell & Co. had employed a fcwarm of "contrabands" in the Cambria Iron Works, at twenty-five cents a day, thereby inducing the "hands in the mill and the laborers outside to throw down their tools and quit work" in diseust tide Indiana Democrat, which paper has the doubtful honor of first giving curren cy to the canard. The fact is, Messrs. Wood, Morrell & Co. have never employ ed, nor do not djw employ, a single "'con traband" or negro, free-born or otherwise, at twenty-five cents, cr any other sum, per day, to the exclusion of white men .hose who retail willful and deliberate falsehood to the contrary notwithstanding. The Loco-Foco press, as a general thing, have jumped at the opportunity of transferring this silly story into their columns, with the view of manufacturing a little politi cal capital. Wo shall see whether thev Ml I ..... J 1 Ml 1 ... 11 DC luny eofccitous toward making Balmy : tho breeza being kicked up in the Indiana papers concerning a treasonable letter alleged to have been written by no Sanson, brother of the editor of the Indiana Democrat, and cm ployed in that office, to a friend in Fulton county. Among other charitablo obser vations and surmises, the writer eaj3 : "I do not despair of the Southern Confeder acy. Tho Yaukees will be cut up and routed as soon as they can not use their gunboats. Old Abe's minions will yet be driven out of the South, and though Fort Donelson and Yorktown and Corinth, and even Richmond, be taken, I will not de spair !" It must be admitted, this is rather strong language. The Democrat undertakes to explain the matter, howev er, by stating that the obnoxious quota tion was written in a mere spirit of bad inage and fun, and with no intention of indicating the real sentiments of the au thor. The Messenger and American can't see it in this light, and between them, they are having a "gay and happy" snarl over it. Hope they may settle the matter to the satisfaction of all concerned, without recourse to the usual expedient in such cases of "pistols and coffee for two I" "Ze Amende." We owe Mr. James Shannon, of Johnstown, an apology. It appears, by the record, that this centla- man, through some auspicious combination of circumstances, succeeded in securing the nomination of Coroner at the late Loco-Foco County Convention and we failed to so chronicle it in our brief but comprehensive summary of the doings and misdoings of that lamented body. Mr. Shannon or, to use a. poetical and exceedingly pertinent expression, the "running Shannon" will therefore please accept our regrets in the premises. Re-recapitulation : Number candidates on Loco-Foco ticket from Johnstown, 4; Ditto from Ebensburg, 3 ; -Scattering, 1 How are you, "rank and file" of the pa-a-rty ? Political. The People's Convention of Indiana county have nominated Win M. Stewart for Congress, Harry White fcr Senate, and John W. Huston for As sembly. In Blair county, the People's Conven tion have nomiuated R. A. M'Murtrie for Assembly. Hon. S. S. Blair secured the Congressional conferees. Strawberries. Fire ! A frame house, belonging to and occupied by a man named Lily, we are. informed, in Monster township, was burned to the ground on Friday cf last week. Loss ui.known. EXUIBl T10N AT LOR ETTO. To tht Editor of The Allrghaiiian : The exhibition of the pupils in atten tendance at St. Francis College, Loretto, came off on Thursday last. For the ben efit of such ae had not the pleasure of being present on the occasion, I herewith give a brief report of the proceedings. It would be encroaching on your space to enter into elaborate details concerning the different performances, and where credit is due to many it were hardly fair to name a few ; yet the talent exhibited by . several of the students deserves more than a mere passing notice. Foremost among the exercises of this class was a recitation entitled "The Mi niac," rendered by Charles Shevland. His efforts in depicting the different pas sions and emotions which are supposed to actuate the "man gone mad," the contor tions of the lmbs and features, the differ ent phaes of woe, despair, entreaty and fear, won for him the well merited plaudits of a ciowded and appreciative audience. Mr. S. certainly deserves the palm. Some of the plays were well rendered. I was especially pleased with the character of the "Yankee Pcdler," in a play bearing the same name. The singing was excellent, particularly a Dutch song by Mr. M'Hugh, which brought down the house. The music was also very good. Altogether, the several performance? were creditably rendered, and the exhil.-i. tion a decided success. The many visit- or in attendance passed a panant a well Letter from Jo'itastovf u. Jobkbtcwx, June 30, 1662. To the Editor cf The AUeghanian : Another of thoso disgraceful occurren ces which cast a foul blot on the name and famo of a town, transpired here on day last week. The circumstances are briefly these : Two men, named Philip Torpy and Edward Burns, became invol ved in a dispute, which resulted in a fight. Burna knocked Torpy down, and kicked him in the abdomen, injuring him severe ly and rendering him entirely senseless. He lingered in this condition for two dajs, when he died. An inquest was held, and a verdict in accordance with th above facts returned. Burns suceteded in ma king good his escape. These diagraoeful street fights are beoomicg quite too ocui inon, and steps should be takes to put a stop to them forthwith. A Welshman named Evan Evans was found drowned in the canal, near the weighlock, on Friday, last. He was last seen leaving an ale-shop on Canal st. at about eleven o'clock on Monday night pre vious. Search was instituted on Wednes day, but it was not until Friday that the missing man was found. The verdict of the inquest was "accidental drowning " A man whose name I did net leuru was killed in the mines, on Fiiday, by a mass of slate falling upon him. This is the second accident of the kind that has oc curred lately. The great managerie paid us a visit on Wednesday, and, as is usually the care with affairs of the kind, attracted an iia mense crowd to town, principally from the "rooral" districts. Lager and gingerbread had to suiter correspondingly. I am in formed the cumber of tickets sold to the managerie alone reached 4,500. I would like to say a word about the new style of bonnets now being displayed along our streets, but fear of the fair own ers almost deters me. However, those who have not yet had the exquiaite pleas ure of seeing them can form a pretty good conception of what they look like by imagining the arched or gothic part of a church window set on the front of a email wooden pail. This comes the nearest of anything I could suggest. Shouldn't won der if the next agony were an imitation of a church steeple on top of the gothic part It would look no nice you know. E. The Continental Monthly fcr July is an attractive number. It contains many able articles, a portion of which are devo ted to the War and the great questions growing out of it. It is distinctively American, and bold and progressive in thought and opinion. It deserves a Lrge circulation. Knickerbocker for July is on our table. It full" maintains the Ligh char acter for excellence the magszine has al ways enjoyed, and is, all in all, a tip-top number. Long may "Oil Kuick" flour ish !
