Campbell, was killed on the railroad in Harrisburg, some days iace, by being run over by a train of cars. A suspicion of foul play in the premises is entertained, from the reason that the unfortunate man was known to have been in possession of some seventeen dc'.'ars a short time before his death, whereas but five cents were found upon him afterward. To-morrow is St. Val entine's day, on which occasion, as the legend hath it, the birds will prove their devotion to Union by choosing their re spective mates for the coming summer. Wc point a moral herewith by saying to those of our readers who approximate to the feathered creation by reason of their incessant "billing and cooing :" Go and do likewise. 3Ir. Frank Hay, of Johns- tovrc, whose Safe recently refused to open at bidding, has had the difficulty reme died by shipping it to Philadelphia and allowing the makers to operate on it. The cost of transportation, etc., amounted to over twenty dollars which . sum is ray ther steep than.otherwise, all things con sidered. Mr. If. has the satisfaction of knowing, however, that his money has been invested in a very Safe channel ! Last Sunday was the coldest day of the fct-ason in this latitude. The thermometer runged somewhere below 0 in close prox imity to the point where the machine gins out and the figgers run into the ground. V-h. ! We are sorry to learn that our matrimonially disposed young friends, the .Misses Sorrento whose manifesto appear tl in these columns some weeks since lave sijrnally failed as yet in securing their "hearts' brightest, fondest dream" to wit, a couple of husbands. Take courage, fair ones hope on. There nev er was a goose so gray, but one day, soon or lute, some honest gander came that way md took her for his mate ! "William Area true, convicted some three years ago iu this county of the manslaughter of young Becmish, and sentenced to the ici.itentia: v for the term of four vears and six months, lias been pardoned by Governor Curtin. The Standard is afraid that there will be a poor show for juleps, cobblers, smashes and ice cream in Ilollidaysburg next sum mer, owing to the scarcity of ice there-fch-jut. This will be melancholy, indeed ! The people of that gay and festive burg wili have our sympathies, in case the above ciooniy foreboding prove true. The house of Wm. Carland, in Allegheny tp., this county, together with its contents, completely destroyed by fire on the Light of the SOth ult. The Borough election, which i3 to be held on Friday week, appears to absorb very little public attention. The first step toward naming candidates for the various offices remains jet to be taken.- Those in need of clocks, watches and jewelry should go to Irs. Stahl's to purchase. Evidently not a Silver Gray. We clip the following spicy correspon dence from a late number of the Harris burg Patriot & Union QCARTEBS OF SlLTER GHATS, "I Camp Cuhtin, Feb'y. 8, 1862 Editors of "Patriot and Union" Gentle men : In the local column of your paper of the 7tli inst., I find the following : Robt. M'Cracken, a Silver Gray, wandered away from Camp, and fell into the hands of the Philistines, lie was decidedly drunk for an old man, but pleading hard, and proni ising.'to stop these youthful indiscretions, he was permitted to go to Camp. As we have no name on our roll that cor responds with that of the distinguished indi vidual referred to iu the foregoing, it is evi dent that either you or the "Philistines," or both, have been deceived. The reputation of the Silver Grays is of too much value'to ourselves and our friends, to permit the charge preferred in your article to pass with out contradiction. You will confer a favor by correcting the mistake. Yours, Itesp'y. Thomas A. Magcibe. A Villain Nabbed. Samuel "Welsh, who will be remembered as the individu al incarcerated in our county jail iu the summer of 1SG0,,, for the heinous offence of committing a rape upon the person of a married . woman in "Jackson township, and who made his escape therefrom after a confinement of about a month, was re captured in Allegheny City on Monday, lie was removed hither ou Tuesday, and remanded to jail, where it is to be hoped he will remain until he secures the just retribution of his crime. Accident. Mr. John Bum ford, of this place, met with an accident one day last week which came well-nigh proving fatal. When driving a sled down the descent from the west end of town, the locking-machine came in contact with a stone, causing it to fly back suddenly and with great force, and striking Mr. B. a terrific blow in the region of the left eye. lie was severely and even dangerously injured, but is now recovering: Sudden Deahi. The community was startled on Monday by the report of the death of Mrs. Jackson, wife of Dr. R. M. S. Jackson, of Cresson, this county. She died at llarrisburg, on the Sunday prece ding, after an illness of but short dura. tiou. She was well known here, and highly esteemed for her many virtues. Peace to her ashes ! Snow. The sleighing in thi3 vicinity siill continues excellent, and the merrie jingle of the bells is heard on our streets from morn tiil eve. Our wish is that this dispensation the Weather Clerk remain unchanged for a month to come. Died. Superintendent's Report. EBEKSECKG,-di'y. 1, 18G2. ITok. T. II. Bcrrows, State Sup't: My commission wa3 received on Monday, Janua ry Cfh, 1302 ; but circumstances, of which the Department has already been informed, prevented my entering upon the discharge of official duties until the 13tu. Iu accordance with instruction 174, in the Journal, January No., 1SJ1, I submit the following report of operations from the 13th of January, until the 1st of February, 18C2 : District Examinations. During the interval between Mr. Swank's resignation and my ap pointment, the directors of several districts, viz : Cambria, Carroll, Clearfield and Taylor, were compelled to employ teachers who Lad no certificates. Having been notified of thi3 fact, I examined these teachers, eight in num ber, and granted them certificates. Visitation of Schools. Since my appoint ment, twenty-seven schools have been visi ted. The duration of each visit wa3 from one to three hour3 ; the time being occupied in examining classes, to ascertain their pro ficiency, and the manner in which they were instructed, and in noting the condition of building and furniture, the mode of teaching, capability of the teacher to impart instruc tion, &c. Institutes. The tcacher3 of Ebensburg and Cambria township, early in the winter, or ganized an institute, and have sinte held regular semi-monthly, meetings. A call to a distant part of the county prevented me from attending the only meeting since my appoint ment. It is believed that, with this excep tion, there are no institutes in Cambria. It is now too late to remedy thi3 evil ; but if any effort of mine can efi'cct it, there will be, next year, as many institutes as there are schoul-districts'iu the county. No. of days spent in discharge of official duty. 10. No. of official lctter3 written, 10. "Whole number of iuiles traveled, 235. The only difficulty encountered, was that of getting the company of directors, without losing time in going alter them ; but when ever I could see them they cheerfully acconi jumied me, and I have had one or more direc tors or citizens with me at nearly every school. I have been received and treated with mark ed kiuclness by the directors, teachers and citizens of everv district visited. I V A. SCOTT, Co. Svp't. j THE CAMPAIGN IN THE INTERIOR. Deui.au, February 10, 1861. From Our Own Correspondent. Beulah as I took occasion some days ago to observe is safe ! It was a big thing, was the garrisoning of this important outpost. In the early stage of the war, Mr. Beauregard allowed his eye to wander longingly hitherward. A gentleman of tho most extreme credi bility states that he even entertained the charitable crotchet of crossing the Vir ginia line, making a rapid detour across the kedentry, and seizing the city itself! lie would thu3 have been enabled to es tablish a point d'oppui for operations of a very offensive nature again3t tho more northern portion of the State, Indiana county included. Johnstown, lying directly on the line of march of the advancing foe, would have fallen at the first blow. It not at the fhatj at the second or third blow at the furthest. In which case, the National Foundry in all likelihood would have been obliged to content itself with some other location. The gentleman who brings this intel ligence can be relied on. Born of rich though honest parents, he ha3 had ad vantages which incapacitate him from tel ling a lie. lie was expelled from South Carolina for saying that the North Pole was a longer and better stick of timber than the South Pole. Such is the igno rance and impudence of the Shivvelry ! lie lives at Suspender X lloads when at home. His latchstring hang3 out. Beulah is safe ! I was a few too numerous for P. G. T. I came in a dot or two ahead. The particulars concerning my timely occupation of my present position are too well known to require repetition. Every body minds them. If they don't, they should. History adorns one of her bright est pages with an accurate account of that neat little affair. Turn to it and become posted. Suffice it to say that Beulah is safe. The Oiliana Guards, Capt. Caleb Smith, are here. Apropos of Guards : It is axiomatic that this title is a favorite with military organizations. We have State Guards and National Guards, Curtin Guards and Capitol Guards, Safe Guards and Home Guards, Guards this, Guards that, and Guards the other. The Rebels have Beaure Guards and Black Guards. Beulah Bridge is guarded by night and day. Between the two, a pretty strict surveillance is kept up. Communication with the Federal Capital must be kept open, at whatsoever expense of blood, money, and other incidental et cetcras. The Blacklick river is subjected to a scrutinizing watch. I think it may be considered perfectly secure. I adminis tered the oath of allegiance to it the other day. It took it without the least out ward manifestation of fear, favor or affec tion. After which, il allowed it to run. I believe I am guilty of no breach of confidence in fact, I am sure I ain't when I say I am of the firm opinion that I can hold my present posisli against any force that may be brought against me. The rank and file have great confidence in me. Any person wishing to Eend me any money or things will direct them to this post office. I make a reeonnoisance down the river to-morrow. If I fall, write on my tomb stone : "He dared do Bight side up with Care." This will be a happy combination, suggestive of Ten Kyck, David Crockett, Adams & Co.'s express, and other impor tant public personages. "What is that ? ? ? ? It is it is the cannons' opening roar I" I must go and see what the row's about. If anybody asks for me, tell him I still live, and give him a shilling to drink to my health. Suggest, moreover, that he drink out the change. If unable to do this, he can call up his friends. We meet again at Phillippi ! Yours, CALEB SMITII. Trial List.
