:JANUARY 23. letter from tlie "Silver Grays. Camp Ccbtix, Jany. 18, 1802. eorreppondencc of The Alleghanian. It o-ivesyour correspondent much pleas ure to announce the fact, that the "Silver drays" now present a full company, as required by the Act of Congress Our foil embraces the number cf Eighty frree, rank and file, the minimum deman ded to warrant the issuing of Commissions to the Captain and two Lieutenants. As cne hundred and 6ne members, cf all erades, constitute a maximum company, you will perceive that there is room left for a few more recruits. "Ye have infor mation of several making preparations to join cur ranks, some ot whom will he here 0Q Monday or Tuesday. The company having germinated in "Little Cambria," it is desirable that her hardy sens should have the honor of claiming a majority of its members. Of the eighty-three who hare been sworn into the service, fifty two liTiil from our county.' Our Cambria 'boys" are very solicitous that a majority of the remaining eighteen, who may he admitted, shall come down from our hill tops aud out of our mountain fastnesses, 13 ioiii us under the broad banner of our glorious country. It is true, that we now have the preponderance of a maximum company, but it is desirable that the ma jority should be as striking in a maximum, a it is now in the minimum company. Then, we proclaim to our friends at home that the present "is the accepted time." Lot no one delay, who has the remotest intention of "being one of us." The all absorbing topic of conversation in camp is the expected payment of the eoUiers now here. It is said, that that much hoped for event will transpire next woek. If so, we will have an exhibition a sudden transition from poverty to aSaence. Many have not received a dime for over live mouths. To such this coming distribution of "the root of all 2viV will be most'welcome. The interest manifested in the welfare vi the "Silver Grays," among these rc-si-?in in the vicinity of the camp, may be inferred from the contents of the annex el end from cur Captain, published in the "llarrisburg Telegraph" of the 17th iriat. The card will speak for itself: Qi-auteiis or Silvfr Gbays, ") Camp Curtin, Jany. 10, lt2. 'I htti requested to express to the generous doaors the heartfelt thank? of the men under civ e-ji.sjjjaiid for these repeated manifesta tions of sympathy. We cannot designate the names of the la i5i':3 whose bf-iiiiicertce has awakened in the heart of every ".Silver Cray" a solicitude for t.'-eir happiness here and hereafter. Their v.hhing to remain incognito only serves to cn-l.aru-e the value of tlicir gifts, as it is convin '.':r. j tvi ience that the motives which prompted ta acts were an expanded patriotism and a respect for age. I but r iterate the unani r.oa expression of the members of my com pany when I salute the ladies referred to in this communication with a fervent Cod t'ess you." Wm. Pa lm tit, Curtain. It has been asserted by many who claim to speak by authority, that the 'Silver Grays" will be detailed by the Governor to take charge of the State Ar senal and Warehouse, containing the pub lie stores in TIarrisburg. This duty is now being performed by a compari' under the command of Capt. G. W. P. Davis, whieb. has been attached to Col. "Wilson's liegiaient. If this rumor should assume he proportions of reality, the "Grays" iave comfortable quarters for a time t least, during which they can be per fected in their drill, and be prepared for 'he discharge of more onerous dutic3. " Governor Curtin is evidently favorably 'repossessed in favor of the "Silver 'frays.". He has manifested it by his se ction of our company as a guard of the public property. lie has also been urged this determination by the good citizens f Harrisburg, who seem to prelcr having uch as are the "Grays" stationed in their Clt'. to the more vivacious soldiery com posing the camp. There is a remarkable fact in counec tl0Q with our company which is worthy f note, and which cannot be said cf any 'her that has been hero as long sxs it a?- The fact to which I allude is this : Notwithstanding the average age- of the Members is a fraction over fifty-two years, not one has been occupant of the Hospi ijncu the company ha? been in camp. THURSDAY:::: This is as gratifying as it is tma, and must dispel any fears that may be enter tained by our friends, resulting from the exaggerate! stories which have been cir culated in relation to tho healthy location of the camp. An interesting event took place here on the occasion of tho lato visit of our friend, A. C. Mullin, Esq. I will reserve a notice of it for my next letter, as this one must be necessarily brief, owing to your correspondent's engagements in an other direction. For the present, I must bid 3ou adieu, promising your readers to use my best efforts to be more entertain ing in my succeeding "friendly talks." High Private. Big Thing for Bachelors! It al ways agrees with our general corporosity to do good. In fact, we dote upon dis seminating joy. happiness, ecstasy and highlariousness with an unsparing hand upon all around us. More or less, as the case may ba. In this instance, we have but one class of unfortunate human beings to do with. To wit : Bachelors. Bachelors are generally supposed to constitute the most miserable, morose, misanthropic, and altogether God-forsa-kenest genus of mortals in existence. Therefore, we approach the pleasant task of relieving their main ailment, otherwise ministering to their most palpable defect, with gratification ineffable. Head : ( Verbatim, et literaiim, ct 2uncfuatim.) rlVO LADIES wish to get husbands, rood moral sober genteel young man (and a handsome income) we are ourselves good looking industrious and good housekeepers, we are not afraid of our hands getting spoil ed, (we also have a handsome income) our age is between eighteen and twenty-t.vo. IIattie & Julia Sorrento. An accompan3'iug note requests us to dress the alove in "a better stilft" before publishing. This is simply impossible, no other "stile" would do justice to the occasion. We are also assured that wc will be paid "presently." Our terms are one dollar. If IIattie and Julia succeed in securing husbands on the strength of their adver tisement, it will probably be by reason that the fools are not all dead. Johnstown Items. A Welshman by the name of Evans, while laboring under an attack of mania a potu, the other day, jumped from a window in the third story of the Mansion House to the pavement below. Strange to &ay, however, he was not much injured. One of the Clinton street stores -was relieved of the sum of some fifty odd dollars, recently, by a gen tlemanly looking fctrangcr, who akcd and obtained permission to write a letter be hind the counter. Before the theft was discovered, the perpetrator had success fully cut stick and vanished. Mr. Charley Ellis made a narrow escape from drowning in the Stonv Creek, on Friday night. He accidentally fell into the "ra iinir tcrrient," and only succeeded in re gaining terra Jirma hy the. jud't-ious -use of a stick of timber vhich fortunately happened near- hy. By the report of Superintendent M'Corrnick, it appears that the whole number of pupils in atten dance at the public schools of Johnstown is 771. The foregoing items are glean ed from the Cambria Tribune. Peronai.. Our worthy and respected friend, Ex-Sheriff Linton, together with fumil3T, last week took his departure from ' our midst for Johnstown, where in future he intends residing. Knowing his many good qualities of head and heart, wc are sincere!' sorry to lose him from our list of citizens. He has our warmest wishes for his entire success in whatsoever vo cation he may hereafter engage. Mr. John Buck, the successor of Sher iff Linton, last week took up his residence in this borough. Although we opposed Mr. B.'s election last fall on political grounds, we would be untrue to our pr eonal feelings did we fail to extend to him the right hand of greeting, and bid him welcome. Here's till yc, Sheriff! Out and In. On last Thursday, Mr. John A. Blair, who during the past two years has faithfully served the people ol Cambria iu the arduous and responsible office cf County Treasurer, gave way to his successor, Mr. Thomas Callan. It is ad mitted on all hands that Mr. Blair made a courteous and accommodating official we are sure that Mr. Callan will prove himself ditto. Success to both ! Oil! It is currently reported and gen erally believed that the "Ebensburg Oil Company" a local institution, owing its "bornation" to the oleaginous furore of last spring has succeeded in striking a vein of oil which yields at the rate of six j barrels per hour. The well i? located on ' Oil Creek, in Ohio. Ooa Correspondents. As our read ers have doubtless perceived, during the past month wo have secured the services of a number of new correspondents, whose effusions add greatly to the interest and variety of our columns. 11 Hugo" our Ilarrisburg correspondent, wields a ready and trenchant pen. nc is also fully post ed as regards the "ropes" political, and is emphatically, ihe man to dish up the do ings and misdoings cf the savans at the State Capitol, for the edification of the community at large. "Horace" of the 54th regi ment Penna. Vols. mor f amiliarly known as the Cambria County Regiment sends us this week an interesting letter from Camp Curtin, which will be found on our first page. Having had some considera ble experience in the line, Horace will be abundantly able to "take notes" of the adventures of the 54th a regiment in which all Cambrians possess a local pride and interest. We hope, and hereby re quest, that he favor us with a weekly epis tle, if possible. Our relitihle as well as racy Camp Pier pont correspondent, "E." and "Boaner ges," of Camp Wood, Kentuck', will also be on hand as often as circumstances per mit.
