In a lawyer's office in this State lay a mortgage for SI, 100, which was within a few days of being due. One morning the man of whose place the mortgage was held, called and inquired if the paymeut could not be put off for a short time. Ud was a man somewhat advanced in. life, and very intemperate. He pleaded for a time, but to no purpose. Overcome with emotion the old mar sank into a chair, and there sat for two hours, appa rently unconscious ot anything thai was passing around him, when a carriage drove up to the door, and a lady stepped from it. She entered the office. After stand ing a few moments eyeing ths ohi man with iute-rest aud emotion, she spoke the old gentleman looked up. "Father, how do you do ':" "Oh ! How touching is the tribute of Hon. T. II. Benton to Lis mother's influence: "31y mother asked me never to use to bacco. I have never used it from that time to the present day. She asked me net to game, and I cannot tell who is wia nicg and who is losing, in games that can be played. She admonished me, too, against hard drinking; and whatever ca pacity for endurance I have at present, and whatever usefulness I may attain ia life, I have attributed to having complied Trith her pious and correct wishes. Evans axo Watson- : Gentlemen The small size No. 1 Salamander safe which I purchased from your agent, Mr. Adam R. Ba-r, in Lancaster City, on July 20th, 1S58, h:t3 been subjected to a very severe test, which fit withstood in a most satisfactory manner. i This Safe, containing all my books together with valuable papers belonging to myself aud some to my neighbors aud friends, and rcpreseting a val to of over Twenty Thous and Dollars, ($20,000) was in my Mill which was destroyed oa the night of the 27th of Ju Jy, 18C0, and passed through the liery ordeal unscathed. The Saf e was on the second floor and fell to the basement of the Mill, and w as subjected for six hours to an intense heat among the rui.is, which was greatly increased by the combustion of a large quautity of grain confined within the brick walls After the fire the safe was opened and the books and papers taken out in a state of perfect preser vation, the paper not even being discolored. This fact was, however, to many bystanders a better recommendation of your Safes than could be expressed iu any other words from me. Yours Respectfully, sel3 SAMUEL RANCK.
