The Frencti aejlnicsitiilBarbr. A peculiarity of th f reuch .rmy is the regimental burbe'r. who nearly always norvbS bin uunrfenticesliip on the cheek of his brother- in anna j . and it is a rough appreutiohip a tur as the checus are couceroe!. We would nut wwh our worst enemy to come uoier Uh razor to try hi? Ilhtue3. of hand. Uefurs entering the aervico he was probably "a mechanic, a carpenter or iuusou ; his obtained him the important post of bar ber, and henceforth he wields scissor? and razor with more conscientiousness than euceeBS. This post is oue of tho most en vied in the regiment, ami the man that holds it is no little proud of it. In tho first place, ho receives a monthly pay re sulting 1'rom small stoppages of the so -Jiers ; next, he has permanent leave till 10 o'clock, P. M. ; aud lastly, he is ex empted from a good deal of duty. But it must not be supposed that the office is a einecure ; tho barber is responsible for all tho heads of the company ; if the beards are too long, or the hair beyond the rogu lation length, ho is responsible for it. There are the regulations he must carry them out to the letter ; hold an inspec tion, and shear his comrades as close as possible, frequently much against their will. There are men very fond of their hair, that natural ornament of man. The smart soldier would like to wear his hair long perhaps that a young lady's hand may ruffle his curls ; but the regulations are pitiless. Said a worthy corporal ence : "From the moment that the hair is seiza ble by the hand it requires to be cut." All sorts of schemes are naturally employed by tho natty trooper to save his hair ; he wets it every morning, or fastens it down on his forehead with cosmetics, But his labor is in vain ; the officers are up to their tricks, and the delinquent and re sponsible barber generally get four nights' guard-room. The old foxes do not have resource to these clumsy methods, but pretend to be deaf, thus obtaining from the surgeon-major permission to wear long hair, lteview days are terrible to the bar ber, for in less than two hours he must shave two hundred beards, without counting the hair-cutting. He should be seen then with his sleeves tucked up to the elbows, armed with his tremendous razor, which he has not found time to set ; the soldiers lather themselves be forehand, and seat themselves on after another on the bench of punishment. The thing is done ina twinkling the strongest beard cannot resist, and the bris tles that decline to be cut off are plUeked out; the cheek may bleed but that is a very slight afFair, for what is a scar after all to a soldier ? The barber is a consci entious man ; if he cut off the tip of an car, for iustanee, he is very careful to re store it to the legitimate owner. The troopers iear the razor, but ridicule the barber ; they call him the butcher or the flayer, though in a low voice, for if he were to hear them he holds vengance in his hands. In all the regiments that have fought in Algeria the barber has a tortoise-shell for a soap-dish. Sanc tioned bv the hi-rhest medical authorities, both in Europe and the United States, and prescribed in their practice. The experience of thousands daily proves that no preparation of Iron can be compared with it. Impurities of the blood, depression of vital energy, pale and otherwise sickly complexions, indicate its necessity in almost everv conceivable case. . ...... i Innoxious in all maladies in which it has ueen tried, it has proved absolutely curative in each of the following complaints, viz: In DclUi'Li!, Nervous Affections, Emaciation Diirnej'sia, Constipation, JJtarrliaa, J.) u sent try Incipient Consumption, Scrofulous Tuberculosis ...... n-f- . in Salt Rheum, Jlisinensiruaiion, h naes, niuru sis. Liver Complaints, Chronic Headaches, Rheu ntatism. Intermittent Fevers. Pimples on tht Face. etc. In cases of General Debility, whether the result of acute diseases, or of the continued diminution of nervous and muscular energy from chronic complaints, on trial of this re storative has Droved successful to an extent which no description nor written attestation would render credible. Invalids so long bed ridden as to have become forgotten in their own neighborhoods, have suddenly reappeared in the busy world as if just returned from pro tracted travel in a distant land. Some very signal instances of this kind are attested of female sufi'crers, emaciated victims of uppa- 1 ent marasmus, sanguineous exhaustion, crit ical changes, and.that complication ol nervous and dyspeptic aversion to uir and exercise for which the physician has no name. In Nervous Affections ol all kinds, and tor reasons familiar to medical men, the operation of this preparation of iron must necessarily be salutary, for, unlike the old oxides, it is vigo rously- tonic, without being exciting and over heating: and gt ii t!v,' regularly aperient, even in the most obstinate cases of co?tiveness, without ever being a gastric purgative, or in nictirij; a disagreable sensation. It is this latter property, among others, which makes it so remarkably effectual and perma nent a remedy for Piles, upon which it also appears to exert a distinct and specific action, by dispersing the local tendency which forms them. In Dyspepsia, innumerable as are its causes, a single box of these Chalybeate Tills has of ten sufficed for the most habitual cases, inclu ding the attendant costiveness. In unchecked JUarrho a, even when advanced to Dysentery, confirmed, emaciating, and appa rently malignant, the effects have been equally decisive and astonishing. In the local pains, loss of flesh and strength, debilitating cough and remittent hectic which generally indicate Incipient Consumption, this remedy has allayed the alarm of friends and physicians, in several very gratifyiug and in teresting instances. In Scrofulous Tuberculosis this medicated Iron has had far more than the good efi'ect of the mo.it cautiously balanced preparations of iodine, without any of their well known lia bilities. The attention of females cannot be too con fidently invited to this remedy and restorative, in the cases peculiarly affecting them. In Rheumatism, both chronic and infiamato ry in the latter, however, more decidedly it has been invariably well reported, both as alleviating pain and reducing the swellings and stiffness of the joints and muscles. In Intermittent Ftrers it must necessarily be a great remedy and energetic restorative, and its progress in the new settlements of the West, will probably be oue of high renown and use fulness. No remedy has e ver been discovered in the whole history of medicine which exerts such prompt, happy and fully restorative ef fects. Good appetite, complete digestion, rap id acquisition of strength, with an unusual disposition for active and cheerful exercise immediately follow its use.
