. t t ' - r 1 1 .5 - '1 Fort Pickexs he Taken I A chivalrous SirceswionLit in :i Mobile pupor hU"-"ests a novel plan for capturing Fort Pickens. He says : "It is well known that, there are some chemicals so poisonous tli.it au atmosphere impregnated with them makes it impossi ble to remain where they are, as they would destroy life or interfere so much with respiration as to make fresh air indispensable-. That the whole atmosphere of Fort Pickens can be so impregnated in a short time can be shown to be by no means chimerical ; and uot only not chi merical, but easily effected. "It will not cost so much as to be im practicable, and may cost infinitely less than a regular sei-jre ; not only in money, but in life. . Almost everybody knows that burning red pepper, even in small ouantities a teaspoont'ul will clear the largest room of a crowd in a lew moments; that 'the least sauff of eratriawill make one cough himself into consumption ; that some gases are so poisonous to life that the smallest quantity will kill hy drocyanic acid aud arseniurretted hydro gen, for instance. Ey mixing red pepper and veratria with the powder with which the shell arc filled, or by filling large shell of extraordinary capacity with poisonous gases and throwing them very rapidly in to the fort, every living soul would have to leave in double quick time it would be impossible to breathe there. If the bombardment is effected in a dead calm, the result would be certain ; and often at Fort Pickens there is not a breath of air stirring from daylight until ten o'clock in the uiorning." The Pubitan and the Cavalier. The London Spectator, in some comments on the relations ot the two sections of this country, says that the population of the North bear to-day the relation to the Southerners which their Puritan lore fathers bore to the cavaliers who planted Maryland and Virginia. Slower, aud perhaps less chivalrous, the spirit of the Puritan is more earnest and persistent, and rises to a pitch of enthusiasm which renders victory or destruction the only possible alternative. The Puritan- has al ways been victor in the end, from Marston Moor to the last struggle in Kansas and his feeiings now seem thoroughly aroused. Es, "File right !" said an officer to his company." 'Bedad," said an Irishman, who stood near sharpening his saw, "it's me own property, and I'll be Join' as I plaze wid it for all you !" JBSiy Agents wanted to sell the Erie Sewing Machine. K APF.RTENT nncl stomachic rrepa- ration of Iron purified of Oxygen and Carbon by combustion in Hydrogen. Sanc tioned bv the lushest medical authorities, both in E'urope and the United States, and prescribed in their practice. The experience of thousands daily proves that no preparation of Iron can le compared with it. Impurities of the blood, depression of vital energy, pale n,i nUif-nvitf sic-klv conudcxions, indicate its neressitv in almost even' conceivable case Innoxious in all maladies in which it has been tried, it has proved absolutely curative in each of the following complaints, viz: In Debility, -Nervous Affections, Emaciation Dyrju-pvia,' Constipation, JJiarrha-a, Dysentery, Incipient Consumption, Scrcfulous Tuberculosis, Salt Rheum, Mismenstruation, Whites, Chloro sis, Liver Complaints, Chronic Headaches, untu tiatuut, liitemuttent l evers, j. unties on Mi lace, etc. In cases of General Debility, whether the result of acute diseases, or of the continued diminution of nervous and - muscular energy from chronic complaints, on trial of this re storative has proved successful to an extent which no description nor written attestation would render credible. Invalids so long bed ridden as to have become forgotten in their own neighborhoods, have suddenly reappeared in the busy world as if just returned from pro tracted travel in a distant laud, come very l instances of this kind are attested of female sun'erer3, emaciated victims of appa rent marasmus, sanguineous exhaustion, crit ical changes, and that complication of nervous and dvsjKPtic aversion to air and exercise for which the phv.-iciau has no name. In Xtrvous Attentions of all kinds, and for reasons familiar to medicalmeu, the operation of this preparation of iron must necessarily be salutary, fur, unlike the old oxides, it is vigo rously tonic, without being exciting and over heating; and gently, regularly aperient, even in the most obstinate cases ol costiveness, without ever being a gastric purgative, or in fiictintr a disagreable sensation. It is this latter property, among others, which makes it so remarkably- eilectual and perraa nent a remedy for Biles, upon which it also appears to exert a distinct aud specific action by dispersing the local tendency which forms them. In Dyspepsia, innumerable nsare its causes a single box of these Chalybeate Pills has of ten sufficed for the most habitual cases, inclu ding the attendant costiveness. In unchecked Diarrha a, even when advanced to Dysentery, confirmed, emaciating, and appa rently malignant, the effects have been equally decisive and astonishing. In the local pains, loss of flesh and strength debilitating cough and remittent hectic which generally indicate Incipient Consumption, this remedv has allaved the alarm of friends and physicians, in several very gratifying and in tercsting instances. In Scrofulous T'ubcrcvlosis this medicated Iron has had far more than the good effect of the moit cautiously balanced preparations of iodine, without any of their veil known lia bilities. The attention of females cannot be too con fidently invited to this remedy and restorative, in the cases peculiarly afl'ecting them. In RheumuUixm, both chronic and inflamnto ry in the latter, however, moredecidedly it has been invariably well reported, both as alleviating pain and reducing the swellings and stiffness of the joints and muscles. In Infiruiittt nt levers it must necessarily be a great remedy and energetic restorative, and its progress in the new settlements cf the West, will probably be one of high renown and use fulness. No remedy has ever been discovered in the whole history of medicine which exerts such prompt, h..ppy and full- restorative ef fects.
