We took occasion not long since to refer to the dis position of the mails between this place and Wilmore, and do so again at the in stance of a large body of our citizens. According to the present arrangement we receive both the Eastern and the Western mails at one and the same time. As the Eastern mail arrives at 9.0S A. M. and the Western mail at 7.o0 P. M., it is plainly to be seen thatone mail is about thirteen hours behind time when we receive it ! Besides, by the time-saving expedient of transporting both mails to Wilmore in one dump, our matter Westward is obliged to lie over at the latter point for the same period of time ! We presume no one will deny that this is a highly refreshing state of things. In the present disordered condition of National affairs, our people feel an excu sable desire to have late news. Under the existing mail schedule, this is impos sible. We would hardly be worse off in this particular did we live in Pensacola, Fla. and there they receive no mails at all. The conclusion we come to in the premises is this If the present contractor cannot deliver our mails as they should be delivered, let him throw vp his contract. We arc confident that plenty of men will come forward and fill it and fill it prop erly on the" same terms. Volunteers from Cambria County. We clip the following extraordinary telegram from the Philadelphia Bulletin of Monday : "Jfarrltoury, May G.- Col. Wm. K. Piper has arrived here from Cam bria county. He has tendered to the General Government, through Gov. Cur tin, one regiment of Infantiy, now organ ized iu Cambria county, to serve lor any period of time that may be designated ; and if accepted, he proffers a bonus of $1,000 to the Stale. Cambria county has four companies accepted. Col. Piper is a gallant soldier, and his men are all hardy mouutainecrs." Yk'e think this dispatch excels anything in the "sensation" line that we have seen tins season. In the first place, no regi ment of Infantry has been organized in this county ; and secondly, Co!. Piper is iu no maimer connected with the military companies that have been organized. We arc inclined to the l;eiicf that the Bulletin hits been slightually sold. In fact, they ave not afraid of the very old gentleman with hoofs and horns himself. CALEB SMITH ON THE WAR Q UESTION. Oiliana, May C, 1861. To the Editor of The Allejhanian ; I feel ferocious. In short, I am ancrri fied. Inflamed. Helligcrent. Beyond description. And I won't be mollified. And not much wonder. After we had brightened up our rusty muskets : scripturally speaking, with a well-timed improvation, "converted our pruning-hooks into swords;" after we had packed our respective kits' and caboodles j and after we had gone through with the necessary amount of handshaking and shed numerous pints of irrepressible briny tears after we had done all these, besides a little thing of mine iu the shape of a farewell speech that I had delivered af ter all these episodes, I say, and just as wc were about to depart from Oilianian scenes of happiness, I received the following tel egram. Blasted hopes and broken vic tuals ! Boo-h-o-o-oo ! Bead it with sirh and a bowel ot compassion. For hope deferred makcth the heart sick : and that's our fix. Capt. C. Smith, Olliana, Pa. I have the honor to inform you that your noble Compa nr, the "Oiliana Guards." is not needed at present. Cause more soldiers on hand now than would be required to rur. the entire body of Rebels into the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, or the Cncsapeake Cay. Respectfully, Ccrtv.v. Ilarrisburg, May 4, 1861. would be considered better than our Com- pany. That's why I'm mad. But if we don't get called out pretty soon : we haven't disbanded : wc are go ing Guerillaing on our own hook. We will proceed down and beard the con temptible lion in his Southern den. We will shake out J. Davis and his entire nest of Traitors by the tail around corners and loosely across the universal Latitudinarian. I am terrible in my wrath : and so, I may add, are all my "'Guards' ThatVwhat we will do. Treason will not be permitted to stalk broadcast over our beautiful land, crushing the budding flower of Liberty as it ad vances. Not while we are about. Them's our sentiments in brief sworn and subscribed to, as in duty bound. Wo ! to any Home Secessionists that may chance to cross to our path until our first burst of passion has received its quie tus ! North Carolina tar wouldn't do jus tice to the occasion. But, ajieu ! I can write no more. Bed- hot fears 11 my eyes, run down my cheeks, and drop iuto my inkstar.d and on my foolscap. Through Baltimore or die ! Pathetically and Patriotically, CALEB SMITH. Wilmore, May 6, 1S01. To the Editor of The Allejhanian: Matters are quiet as usual down here. The war excitement, which raged fiercely in our midst for the past couple of weeks, has in a manner abated. The glorious "Stars and Stripes" were hoisted over Esquire Palmer's Hotel on last Wednesday. The ceremony was in tensely impressive, and was witnessed by a iarge assemblage of persons. After the banner had been successfully thrown to the breeze, Miss Josephino Palmer (a daughter of Mr. P.) was introduced to the crowd, and made a neat and patriotic little speech, in whiph she counselled her bearers, both old and young, to stand by their country and their country's flag un til the last Traitor had bit the dust. Our military company has not yet been ordered into camp. Died On Sunday, 6th inst, Benja min' Franklin, infant son of I. C. and E. Singer, aged one year.
