The news of the attack on Fort Sumter created the most intense excitement in this place. Although the tidings had been momentarily expected for months past, still they were hardly credited when thev lid arrive it was scarcely believed tliat'the Traitors would have the hardi hood" to systematically attack our Starry Ensign- But the sequel proved that the report was only too true. Then did every one know that the lon-drcaded Crisis in the history of our beloved country had arrived ; then was it felt that War in all its hideous deformity had burst upon us. ind every true patriot determined to meet and roll back the advancing tide of Treason On "Wednesday evening, a public meet in'' of the citizens of Ebensburg and vi cinity, irrespective of party, was held in the Court House, and the tcntimeut of the "Frosty Sons of Thunder" put on re cord. See particulars elsewhere. On Friday evening, an informal rneet ir." was held at the Court House, to take into consideration the propriety of organ izing a military company to be tendered to the Government for the suppression of Treason. Thirty-three names were imme diately enrolled, and the meeting was ad journed over until Monday evening. On Monday evening the largest and most pa triotic mass of citizens that ever assem bled in this borough, perhaps, met at the Court House. The ladies turned out en mjsse and graced the occasion with their presence. Patriotic speeches were deliv ered by Messrs. 11. L. Johnston, P. S. Noon, John "Williams, Andrew Lwis, C. lagan. Daniel Jone3, "William Leavy, R. JI. Jones, and others. An excellent band of music was present, and the "Star Spangled Banner" was sung in fine style by Messrs. J. L. P. M'Alister, Hugh II. Hushes and A. A. Parker. The comple ncut of the company was soon filled. It is composed of some of our best citizens, who go not through enthusiasm, but be cause they consider it to be a solemn duty to figjit, and if needs be to die, in the cause of Union and Liberty. God bless theiu all ! The company tendered their services to the Governor on Tuesday, are accepted, and notified to be in reudiness to march at an hour's warning. The company is called the "Cambria Guards An election for officers was held on Tuesday evening, and the follow ing result was had: Captain, ROBERT LITZINGER. 1st Lieutenant, ANDREW LEWIS. 2d H. A. This is the noble spirit ! We may state, by wa' of parenthesis, that no military company has had an or ganization in this place for a number of jeara. This company is entirely newhy fortued, and gotten up expressly in obedi cc:e to the demand of the President. Johnstown. Last week was a busy eek in Johnstown. The news of the Wnnncncement of hostilities between the Government and the Traitors created the aQst intense excitement, and business was suspended for the time being. On Tues- liionuug the requisition for the mili TJ companies (three in number) was rcceived. Recruiting immediately Masbe P1", and in a short time the companies hi received their several complements. Besides these, three or-fpur other, com panies are rapidly being organized One of them, commanded Jy Judge Easly, we understand, left for Harrisburg on Tues day. The Johnstown troops, after being duly armed and equipped at Harrisburg, took the cars for "Washington city on Sunday morning, where they arrived safely and are now on duty. They passed through Baltimore without any trouble. Hemlock. The Washington Rifles, numbering GO men and commanded by Capt. Dick White, took the cars for Har risburg on Saturday morning, where they arrived the same day. They are quartered at "Camp Curlin." This is said to be an excellent company, and will doubtless do cood service. Wilmore. A military company is be ing organized in "Wilmore, and we under stand that the ranks are rapidly filling up. Summit. Capt. Humphreys is speed ily organizing a company at this place. Gallitzin'. A company is' being for med at this place. TUE UNION IT HUSTASD SHALL BE PRESERVED. EG?" According to the new schedule, the mail from the Eust for Ebcusburg arrives at "Wilmore at 9.08 A. 31., and the "West ern mail at 7.30 P. M. It seems to us that the necessities of the case require that we should receive these mails when they arc cue one ta tne morning, and one in the evening ; but according to the present postal arrangements, we receive both mails at one and the same time at 12 o'clock, noon. Bv this disposition, the Western mail is obliged to lie over all night at Wilmore, and until the Eastern mail arrives in the morning. This is eminently unjust and baneful to the in terests of our community. . Besides, both mails leave here at one time, (at 4 o'clock, P. M.,) and mail matter going Eastward is consequently obliged to lie over at Wil more until the next morning. This is indeed a pretty state of affairs ! In plain word., the mail arrangement as at present conducted is a humLuj and a nuisance, and we hope our citizens will take measures to have it rectified forthwith. Singular Circumstance. On Mon day, a man who gave his name as John Weston Hall was discovered in the woods in Jackson tp., this county, in an almost famished condition. He had eaten noth ing for several days, and was almost whol ly destitute of clothing. Besides, his wrists were encircled by a pair of broken handcuffs. lie, states that he is a miner from Coalmont ; that he had been arres ted somewhere for passing counterfeit money; and that lie had escaped from the custody of the officers. He had a hear ing before Esquire Kjnkead, who com mitted him to jail. A gentleman informs us that on Saturday morning an ofTicer of the law telegraphed from Gallitzin to Wilmore that a prisoner had escaped from his cus tody in the cars at about the latter point. This is probably tho identical individual. The Post OrriCE. So it appears that we were all wrong with regard to the Postmastcrship of this borough. It was currently reported and generally believed until within a week past that Maj. John Thompson was to be our Postmaster indeed, it was stated that he had received official notification to that effect; but on Saturday M. S. Ilarr, Esq., received a no tification that Ice was to be the man. We understand that Mr. II. has filled out and returned the requisite bontSs to the P. O. Department, and it is probable that his commission will shortly arrive. Married In Ebensburq, on the 3d day of December, 1800, by the Rev. John Williams, Dr. Joux -II. Clack to Miss Sue P. To the Editor of The Alleghanian : 'The pastwek has been one of intense excitement in our Tiiidst. Business is nearly suspended, and anxiety rests upon every countenance. Three companies have already left us, and some three or four more are rapidly recruiting. The stars and stripes are proudly waving and drums arc beating in all directions. The companies that have left us are the Zouave Cadets, the Johnstown Infantry, and the Citizens' Guards. Each compa ny, before leaving, was presented by the patriotic ladies of Johnstown with a beau tiful stand of colors. Tho presentation speeches were made by D. J. Morrell, and the reception speeches by Col. Jacob M. Campbell on behalf of the Zouaves, and John P. Linton, Esq., on behalf of the Citizens' Guards. Not less than fifteen hundred people witnessed these intensely interesting ceremonies, and cheers and shouts of applause for the Star Spangled Banner made the everlasting bilk? around us echo back the rejoicings of a free peo ple over a flag that has ever been an em blem of Liberty. Our brave citizen sol diery departed with a fixed determination that they would "Forever float that standard sheet, Where breathes the foe, but fall before us ; With Freedom's soil beneath our feet, And Freedom's Flag awaving o'er us." I learn that our companies form part of the Third Regiment Pcnna. Volunteers, the officers of which are as follows : Miuier, Colonel; J. M. Power, Lieutenant-Colonel; Mayberry Irwin, Major; J. M. Campbell, Adjutant. This regiment and ten others left Harrisburg on Satur day evening for Washington city. As an instance of the enthusiasm prev alent here, take the following ; A 3'oung man from Richland township was sent to town by bio parents on Wednesday to sell a basket of eggs ; he arrived here ; disposed of his eggs ; enlisted in the Iu fantr3 ; and by the time his parents were expecting him home, he was on Lis way to Harrisburg ! The intense patriotic feeling of our cit izens will not permit Treason to show its hydra head among us. A man was stoned, knocked down, and otherwise roughly dealt with, for his supposed secession pro clivities. Another was very quietly but earnestly admonished to leave town for the fame cause; and it is needless to say that he complied with the request. Isaac E. Chandler, Esq., has been ofS eially notified of his appointment as Post 3Iaster at this place. Mr. Boggs made a capable and attentive public ofiiccr, and he retires with the good wishes of tho en tire community. The rolling mill continues in operation, and it is the intention of Mr. Morrell, the patriotic manager here, to run it while a dollar of money is to be obtained for that purpose. Steps are being taken to provide for the families of those who have gone forth in the service of, our common country. To this end District Committees have been formed, and the following General Trustees are appointed : D. J. Morrell, S. II. Smith, Lewis Plitt. YODER. Gallitzin, April 20, 18G1. To the Editor of The Allcyhani'tn : A Iarcre and enthusiastic mcetim' was' held at this place on Eriday evening last, for the purpose of raising a volunteer com pany. The meeting was organized by ap pointing Panic! M'Laughlin President, and X. W. Greer and Matthew Kelly Sec retaries. Speeches were made by Major David Mills and Daniel McLaughlin. Every single man in the vicinity, with a few ex ceptions, were enrolled, and also several married men, who have large, helpless families. On motion of Mr. Gilson, Supervisor of P. RIl. for this division, a committee of fifteen were appointed, to make arrange ments for the support of the families of those who' enlisted. The company will hold a meeting on Monday evening, for the purpose of elect ing officers, aud will hold itself in readi ness to march as soon as orders are re- ciiiveu. The meeting adjourned with three eers for the Constitution, tho Union "We forgot to notice last week that GoJey's Lady's Book for Mny liad come to hand. Go thou and do likewise. About here garden-making time. Carrolltow.v, April 22, 1861. Eb. Allegiianian : A large and en thusiastic Union meeting was held in this borough on Saturday last, and a beautiful pole was raised. From its top floats the much loved but now insulted flag of our country. The meeting was called to order by the election of that venerable pioneer of our county, Richard Ashcraft, as President, who, in a few opening remarks, during the time of which the tears rolled down his cheeks and his tottering limbs seemed scarce able to bear him up, said, that in youth that flag had taught him all he knew of love for his country, and even now were he able he would be only too happy to end a long life in avenging the insult to his revered county, l'atriotic addresses were also delivered by several other gentlemen. Mr. Charles Pagan de livered a stirring appeal to his friends to join with him in putting down Rebellion in our beloved country. The meeting then adjourned by giving three cheers for the "Red, White and Blue.", Alpha anj Omega. Hemlock, April 22, 18G0. To the Editor f The Alleyhanian : Old Washington is strongly for the Union ! As" soon as the news reached here that the Presideut had issued his Proclamation, calling on the militia, the Washington Rifles, numbering some sixty mcn, offered their services to defend their country in the hour of need, and were ac cepted. They left here on Friday morn ing for Wilmore to recruit, where they were joined by some of the Frosty Sons of that Borough and vicinity, who were de sirous abo of doing battle for their country in time of need. The officers are Capt. It. White; Lieu tenant, Jno. W. Short, and Orderly Ser geant, Jno. Wilkius, these being the only old omccrs that were here to go. Their friends have the consolation of knowing that they will do honor to them selves and to their country. The company left Wilmore on Saturday at 3 o'clock, A. M. UNION. JuJy 30, IS'GO. Messrs. Evans and Watson: ;etleme The small size No. 1 Salamander safe which I urchastd from your agent, Mr. Adam R. lia r, in Lancaster City, on July 20th, 1858, has been subjected to a very severe test, which it withstood in a most satisfactory manner. This Safe, containing a?l my books, together with valuable papers belonging to myself and some to my neighbors and friends, and reprcseting a value of ovi Twenty Thous and Dollars, ($20,000) was in my Mill which was destroyed on the night of the 27t1i of Ju ly, 1800, and passed through the fiery ordeal unscathed. The Safe wasonthe second floor aud fell to the basement of the Mill, and was subjected for six hours to an intense heat among the ruins, which was greatly increased by -4 he combustion of a large quantity of grain confined within the trick walls. After tho fire the safe was opened and the books and papers taken out in a slate of perfect preser vation, the paper not even being discolorcsl. This fact was, however, to many bystanders a better recommendation of your Safes than could be expressed in any other vrords from me. Yours Respectfully, sel.T SAMUEL RANCK.
