The various assis tant census marshals entered upon the discharge of their duties on the 1st instant. The pay they receive is as follows: two cents per head for the population reported; tie same for each death ; fifteen cents for euch farm of which they report the statis tics; aud they also receive a travel fee necessary to the discharge of their duties. We observe that John Fenlon, Esq., haJ a new plank pavement laid before Lis dwelling-bonse last week, It is quite m improvement on the old dispensation, and adds much to the comfort of pedestri ana. If a number of other pavements that could easily be pointed out, were served the same trick, and "that mud-puddle opposite the barber's shop was reduced to a smaller compass, High street would pre sent a more passable appearance. A little six-year old son of 3Ir. Frederick Kittcll had his right arm fractured in close proximity to the wrist on Friday last. The accident was occasioned by the little un fortunate falling down the bteps attached u the Union School-house, while he was fwraped in play. During the thunder- ht'jiin of Wednesday of last week, a current of electricity entered the rolling-mill at J ;l!iitnvii, and dividing into three sepa- rate ImmIu'3, played some strange freaks. A number of operatives who were handling iron implements were sensibly affected by the shock; some let go their instruments, others woie staggered, while eoine were feced upon their kuees but none were injured, though all were badly scared. So KiV.i the Tribune. Our enterprising friend, Mr. George Huntley, has entered into, and we Lelieve completed, the pon derous undertaking of digging a drain frnm the intended site for a foundation upou which he engages to erect during the present summer, a magnificent Tinware Kp-.t. The drain runs directly across Hich street, and down an alley a distance of about seventy-five feet before it reach es an outlet. Tom Buckley successfully lerfornicd his feat of walking onehundred C"!iecutive hours without rest or sleep, at Johnstown, lie would make an admirable tixolleetor. Uur town was unusually brik on Saturday eve, and a larger amount i crinoline was visible than ha been du ring any one day since fino weather has f t iu. This is shrewdly supposed to have L-eu so from the fact that, agreeably to the provisions of an ordinance made and enacted by our borough fathers, the van eus piles of store-boxes, fire-wood, and other impediments, were recently removed from the streets, thereby giving the fair fedestriennes more room to spread them ."elves. Johnstown is at present flooded ith .spurious and bate imitations of Amer lean currency, from the denomination luown as gold dollar down to that of half dime. Bowman, of the Tribune, li 'se, of the J-Jcho, and a numerous dele tion of "Mineral city-ites" in general, arc on the turf this week attending e-urt.. ye were fayored with a di minutive representation of a hail-storm on hist Wednesday. No damage was done to fetation by it. Talking of stonns, we at- reminded that George W. Storm, the celebrated Cambria county artist, gave hia numerous friends in this section of coun try the pleasure of a shake hands during the present week. We are informed by Mr. Harbison, the pastor of the Presbyte rian churph in this place, that, in addition to the sum of 52 we mentioned as bavin"- been contributed to Father Chinuquy's colony in Illinois, the further donation of two large boxes of wearing apparel, &c., of the aggregate value of S1GG, has been forwarded to the same address by the la dies of his congregation. Clinton It. Jones has just received a large assortment of the celebrated "J. P. Thompson's sold eyed needles," both sharps and betweens -which he offers for sale at the very low price of ten cents per paper, lloll in, la dies, and purchase. People will drink tauglefoot during court-week, and as a consequence, numerous hats with heavy bricks in them and jolly bricks uuder them are to be seen. The "fijrhtiner" brand of whiskey is also occasionally brought into requisition, and sundry raw heads, bloody bones, blackcned eyes aud bindings-over to keep the peace are the result. As a general thing, however, good order prevails. The weather still continues wet and cloudy. Such an immense amount of ruin us has fallen during the past month is not equalled in the recollection of that celebrated individual, ''the oldest inhabitant." Admitted. On Monday last, on mo tion of M. D. Magellan, Esq., Rob ert A. M'Coy, John E. Scanlan, Fran cis A. Shoemaker and George W. Oatman, Esquires, were admitted to practice in the several courts of Cambria county. These young gentlemen are all Ebensburghers, either by birth or adoption, and, we un derstand, passed a highly creditable ex (1 c, i toy, Shoemaker he Office Of 11. L. amination. Messrs. Knowing these candidates for public favor to be men of talent and energy, notwithstanding the crowded state of the legal fraternity, we bespeak fur them a bright and glowing future, and hope they will be amply re warded for their efforts by crowds of cli ents from anions those who deal in the "tortuous wiudintrs of the law." A complimentary supper to the Bar was given by these newly-elected limbs of the law, on Monday night. It was gotten up in recherche style, by Foster and lady, of the "Arcade." All who had the pleasure of participating on the occasion, state that it was in realitv a "feast of rea- son and a flow of soul.' Variety Haul. Thi extensive mer cantile establishment has recently had several new additions put on it by way of adornmci-t by its enterprising proprietors These additions are in main in the shape of a new and complete coat of paint to the building, the erection of two bulk windows of elegant design and finish, aud a thor ough renovation and overhauling of all the fixtures appertaining to the store.- The building will now compete with any in town. Resides this, it is a notorious fact that the goods kept therein are, in quantity, quality and price, second to none in the market. "Merry May" the month of birds, buds and flowers has fallen a vic tim to the scythe of the remorseless ty rant, Time. May is always a welcome month, for in it we see nature burst the icv fetters that so long enthrall her, and come forth in the habiliments of joy. We are indeed loatho to part with her, but merely proposing "a tear to May, and a cheer to June," we hasten to state that the present is emphatically the month to purchase anything after the order of ready-made clothing, boots and shoes, hats and caps, &c, as C. R- Jones has made arrangements by which he is enabled to sell these articles cheaper than ever before. Tuof. J. C. Smitit, A. M. In other days iu schoolboy days I met a lassie fair and wild ; While mutual love our hearts conjoincc!, On me she smiled, ah 1 sweetly smiled. "When scornful eyes on me were turned, Aud angry tongues my name reviled, Then one defended one sustained Aud on me smiled, ah I sweetly smiled. But false to her my bosom proved, And traitor-like her peace I spoiled ; Iu other scenes 1 soon forgot The one who smiled, ah sweetly smiled. Since tben us years have gently flown, I met her once at eveniug mild, And though a smile her cheek adorned, "f was not on me she sweetly smiled. And in the gay enchanting dance Its giddy maze and joys so wild Although her eye spoke sweet content, 'Twus not on me she sweetly smiied. Now oft I'll think in days to come, Of her I cruelly reviled ; And oft my dreams shall be of one Who ou'me smiled, too swettly smiled. Baltimore, June 4, 18C0. J. H. AN APERIENT and stomachic prepa ration of Iron purified of Oxygen and Carbou by combustion iu Hydrogeu. Sanc tioned by the highest medical authorities, both in Europe and the United States, and prescribed in their practice. The experience of thousands daily proves that no preparation of Iron can be compared with it. Impurities of the blood, depression of vital energy, pale and otherwise sickly complexions, indicate its necessity in almost every conceivable case. Innoxious in all maladies in which it has been tried, it has proved absolutely curative in each of the following complaints, viz: In Debility, Xeroous AtTectiong, Emaciation, Dysprpsia, Constipation, iJiarrhoja, Dysentery, Incipient Consumption, Scrofulous Tuberculosis, Salt Rheum, jhsmenstruation, Whites, Chloro sis, Liver Complaints, Chronic Headache, Rheu matism, Intermittent Fever, Pimj-les on the Face, etc. In cases of General Debility, whether the result of acute diseases, or of the continued diminution of nervous aud muscular energy from chronic complaints, on trial of this re storative has proved successful to an extent which no description nor written attestation would render credible. Invalids so long bed ridden as to have become forirotteu iu their own neighborhoods, have suddenly reappeared in the busy world as it just returned from pro traded travel in a distaut land, some very siernal instances of this kind are attested ol female sufferers, emaciated victims of appa rent maranmus, sanguineous exhaustion, crit- ical changes, aud that c and dyspeptic aversion which the physician li complicatioii of uervou3 to air aud exercise tor is no name Iu yervous AtTections of all kinds, and for reasons familiar to medical men, the operation of this preparation of iron must necessarily be salutary, for, unlike the old oxides, it is vigo rously tonic, without being exciting aud over heating; and gently, regularly aperieut, even in the most obstinate cases of costiveness, without ever being a gastric purgative, or in tli'.tinc a disagreable seusation. It is this latterpropertv, among others, which makes it so remarkably effectual and pc-rma nent a remedy for l'ilcs, upon which it also appears to exert a distinct aud specific action, by dispersing the local tendency which forms them. In Ihfpeptia, innumerable as are its cause? a single box of these Chalybeate Fills has of ten sufficed for the most habitual cases, inclu ding the attendant costiveuess I u unchecked Dtarrhvea, even when advanced to Lhsentery, confirmed, emaciating, and appa rently malignant, the effects have been equally decisive and astonishing In the local pains, loss of flesh and strength debilitating cough and remittent hectic which generally indicate Incipient Consumption, this i remcov uas anaveu me uiariu oi menus nuu i, i . i - , c r- - .... .4 physicians, in several very gratifying and in teresting instanced. In Scrofulous Tuberculosis this medicated Iron has had far more than the good effect of the most cautiously balanced preparations ol iodine, without any of their well known lia bilities. The attention of females cannot be too cou fidently invited to this remedy and restorative, in the cases peculiarly affecting them. In Jlheumatutm, both chronic aud intJamato ry in tue latter, however, more ueciaeaiy it has been invariably well reported, both as alleviating pain and reducing the swellings aud stillness ot the joints and muscles. Iu Intermittent levers it must necessarily be a great remedy and energetic restorative, and its progress in the new settlements of the V est, will probably be one of high renown and use fulness. No remedy has ever been discovered in the whole history of medicine which exerts such prompt, happy and fully restorative ef fects. Good appetite, complete digestion, rap id acquisition of strength, with an unusual disposition for active and cheerful exercise immediately follow its use.
