The following beautiful poem, writ ten expressly for The AUeghanian, we take great pleasure in laying before the public. It contains, as will be perceived, a great many beauties not discernible in the writings of Longfellow, beside being of an entirely different metrical composH tion. Under this cap tion were published several 3-ears ago, in this place, a number of articles relative to the geograph-, soil, resources, Ike, of Cambria county. The publication of the journal in which they appeared having been discontinued, the series of sketches was broken off, and what was intended to form a history of the Mountain County was thus left imperfect. We are in pos session of the chapters already published, and, having an understanding with the author that the remainder of the history will be furnished w hen required, we shall be happy to lay the whole before our readers. The history of the early settlement, an ecdutes of private adventure, and notices of noted characters among the pioneers of the Alleghanics, will constitute the main feature in these sketches. They will oc cupy a portion of our columns for a period of six or eight months, commencing with our next number. When completed, they will form a full, correct and circumstan tial history of our own County, and as such should be read and preserved by all. Agricultural Amjukss. We last week began, and this week coxclude, the publication of the address, delivered by the Hon. George Taylor, before the Agricultu ral Societies of Blair and Cambria counties, at their annual fairs held in October last, it is, in truth, a masterly effort, and may be read with pleasure and profit by men of all occupations; but we especially commend its perusal to the farming portion of our comm unit-. Let its man y wholesome sug gestions be pondered over carefully, and we are satisfied that action in accordance therewith will not be regretted. Borough Offickus. Parents should take care to prevent their infant children from meddling with lucifer matches as we are constantly informed by our exchanges of deaths occurring in consequence. As sure as they get hold of a match, they in variably put the dipped end in their mouth and the phosphorescent matter carries death wherever it touches the inside body. The last instance of its fatal effects of which we heard, is that of a little girl aged about two years, daughter of Owen Reich, of Huston, who died the other day through having eating the tops of two or three matches. Parents cannot be too careful jn this particular. Give Your Dugs Water. A freeze up is aln-ays dangerous on account of de-gs. They can get no drink, and become mad. Every person owning a dog, should bo careful to supply the animal with water daily, as the best preventive of hydropho bia. Frequent cases ofthisterribledisea.se occur in severe winter weather, simply be cause the poor dogs find it impossible to simply themselves with water. Ice and snow only aggravate the thirst they must have water. These facts should be more generally known. Swindled. His plan is for the North and South to petition Congress to procure by treaty or purchase, in Central America or elsewhere, the right of settlement and citizenship for the colored race, now free, or hereafter to become free. It w ill not do to emancipate them, without first providing them a place to live in. (I am of the opinion that it would be far better for the whites and blacks to be separate than intermixed.) By this, the individual States that think sla very is a blessing would be at liberty to retain them ; and those of the contrary opinion might emancipate them, when they know there is a place provided for them. To save the Union by the third method, it would cost the Government more than three times what it would to purchase a place for them to live in to sav nothing about the shedding of blood.
